Deputy Shooting Leaves Brandon Bank Robbery Suspect in ‘Very Critical’ Condition: VIDEO

The man was helping detectives recover money from a robbery at Brandon's Grow Financial Federal Credit Union earlier in the day.

A suspect in a Brandon bank robbery is in "very critical condition" after he was shot by a detective at the suspect's home on Bloomingdale Avenue in Valrico.

Deputies had picked up the suspect late Monday afternoon, April 25, at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. The man was cooperating with deputies after the robbery of Grow Financial Federal Credit Union, 604 East Bloomingdale Ave., at 12:40 p.m.

The suspect, a man in his early 30s, told detectives money from the robbery was hidden in the home he shared with his parents at 4719 Bloomingdale Ave.

“The suspect made an excuse to go into the home, where he grabbed a butcher knife, and the detective, fearing for his life, shot him,” said Hillsborough County Sheriff David Gee addressing the media at the scene of the shooting late Monday night.

Some money from the robbery was recovered from the home, Gee said.

The shooting occurred around 9 p.m.

A resident who has lived on the street for 17 years said she didn’t hear any shots.

“I didn’t know anything was wrong until I saw the police lights flashing outside on the street.”

It’s the first time she recalls any problems of this sort on the street.

“It’s a very quiet neighborhood normally.”

The woman described the residents of the home where the shooting occurred as a “quiet” middle-aged couple who have lived on the street for almost 10 years. “I have never heard or seen any trouble at the house before.”

As part of the investigation, authorities blocked from Little Road east to the end of Bloomingdale Avenue which restricts access to the back entrance to River Hills and the entrance to Twin Lakes of Brandon.

This is the second deputy-involved shooting in as many weeks in the Greater Brandon area. Trespass suspect Evelio David Rodriguez was in Brandon. Rodriguez as of April 25 remained in critical condition, according to Sheriff’s spokesperson Debbie Carter.
