Deputy Surprised by Shooting Victim During Traffic Stop

A county deputy was making a routine traffic stop in Brandon Friday night, when the officer was surprised by a vehicle that pulled up behind his patrol car.

A truck driver pulled up behind a Hillsborough County deputy on a traffic stop Friday night in Brandon, opened his vehicle door and fell to the street with two gunshot wounds to the chest.

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, the patrol deputy was on a routine traffic stop with a separate, unrelated vehicle at 9 p.m. Friday, April 5, at U.S. 301 and Casuseway Boulveard, in Brandon, when the incident occurred.

Hillsborough County Fire Rescue arrived and transported the driver and a passenger in the truck to a Tampa area hospital. The passenger had a bullet wound in his arm. The truck driver is in serious condition.

Deputies are invesigating the shootings, which they believe occurred nearby and may be drug-related.
