Dover Eight-Year-Old Boy In Critical Condition After He’s Run Over Twice

Carlos Hernandez was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital after a driver runs him over — twice — at Martin Luther King Boulevard and Sydney Dover Road. A felony charge is lodged.

An 8-year-old boy is in critical condition after he was run over twice by a driver in Dover.

Carlos Hernandez was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital after the accident earlier tonight.

The incident happened when Hernandez and his mother, Carolina Batista, both from Dover, were walking across Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard at Sydney Dover Road at 5:25 p.m., July 5, according to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

Veronica Rarcely Perez-Herrera told officers she had stopped her 1997 Ford Escort for a red light on Martin Luther King and drove forward as the light changed.  Perez-Herrera, 20, then collided with Hernandez, driving over him with her right front tire, according to an FHP report.

Perez-Herrera stopped initially while Hernandez's mother attempted to pull her child from underneath the car. Perez-Herrera then reversed and backed over Hernandez a second time, according to the report.

Perez-Herrera then fled the scene and traveled down Sydney Dover Road, pursued by a witness, Timothy Kelly, 52, of Mulberry, who was able to stop her and convince her to return to the scene of the crash, the report said.

Perez-Herrera was charged with felony leaving the scene of an accident and having no valid driver license.

This incident remains under investigation.
