Hillsborough Sheriff's Office Set To Issue Third-Quarter 2011 Awards

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office each quarter recognizes employees and citizens for their part in helping to make the community a safer place to live. The 2011 third-quarter ceremony is set to begin 2 p.m. Sept. 14 at the Falkenburg Jail Assembly

Hillsborough County Sheriff David Gee will be on hand today, Sept. 14, to recognize his employees and selected citizens for a job well done in helping to combat crime and make the community a safer place to live.

An Awards Recognition Ceremony is held each quarter at the jail assembly room at 520 North Falkenburg Road, in the Greater Brandon area of Tampa.

The third-quarter ceremony kicks off at 2 p.m. and will, according to sheriff’s office spokesperson Debbie Carter, honor personnel “for valor and exceptional work performance” and “recognize recent retirees, employees for longevity of service, and honor citizens who helped save lives and who helped us catch criminals.”

Noted highlights for today’s ceremony are as follows:

  • Senator Ronda Storms (Rep. R-10) is slated to receive the Sheriff’s Special Appreciation Award, which last quarter also went to Storms, along with Rep. Richard Glorioso (R-62), who was in attendance to receive the award. Storm had not been. According to Carter’s release, the Florida Sheriff’s Association recognizes Storms, Glorioso and Rep. Shawn Harrison (R-60) “for their leadership and exemplary support of key public safety legislation issues.”
  • Deputies Stephen Bohling and Danielle Spender are set to receive the Medal of Distinguished Service, for responding to a fire at the Rocky Creek Retirement Community in Tampa in June. Clearing their way through smoke, the deputies found and saved and elderly woman from the fire; the woman survived and is doing fine today, Carter reported.
  • The Outstanding Squad Award will go to the Operation 3D DUI Squad, which also has received the MADD Florida 2010 Outstanding Dedication to Sobriety Checkpoints Award and the 2009 and 2010 Florida Department of Transportation DUI Sustained Enforcement Award, for which the squad won a 2010 Chevy Tahoe. The squad, according to Carter, made 1,136 driving under the influence (DUI) arrests, conducted 34 checkpoints, issued more than 1,000 traffic citations and gave about 1,500 hours of courtroom testimony. Operation 3D draws its name from the warning: “Don’t drink and drive."
