Bush Family Places Memorial Flowers, Mementos in 1st Bucket of Sinkhole Gravel

Jeremy Bush led members of his family in placing memorial flowers and mementos in the first bucket of gravel that was dumped into the deadly Seffner sinkhole that claimed the life of his brother, Jeffrey Bush, on Feb. 28.

Due notice was paid to the final resting place of Jeffrey Bush, 36, who awoke with a start late Feb. 28 to meet his fate in the cavern of a deadly sinkhole. The home in which he lost his life was obliterated after a second day of demolition March 4.

Stabilazation efforts then began, with the first bucket of fill gravel adorned with memorial flowers and mementos that Jeffrey Bush's family had placed there, after solemnly picking them up from where they had last been placed, at the foot of the mailbox at 240 Faithway Drive.

That sidewalk memorial began when Jeremy Bush, who had attempted to save his brother's life that fateful night, placed a single box of flowers across the street from the home, on the eve of the first day of demolition, after it was reported that the search-and-rescue mission had shifted to one of demolition and stabilization.

In a press conference at the scene, early in the morning March 4, Jeremy Bush fought back tears as he questioned earlier reports, which classified the sinkhole as "a chasm that covers a great distance" which renders the area "seriously unstable."

"There is a very large, very fluid mass underneath this house, rendering the entire house, and the entire lot dangerous and unsafe," Bill Bracken, of Bracken Engineering, a chief engineer with Hillsborough's urban, search and rescue team, said at a March 1 press conference. "Unsafe for equipment or any type of vibration. That’s going to severly limit what were doing."

At the scene March 4, Bush fought for composure.

"They said it was dangerous, but you see this heavy equipment, you see that?” he said, choking back tears. “The house is still standing. The only reason the house fell is because they put the machines on it."
