Suspect In Brandon Rape, Kidnapping Was Released From Prison Last Year

Detectives are urging women to always take a walking buddy after the “violent and disgusting attack.”

Detectives are warning women not to walk alone, especially at night, after a Brandon woman was raped as she was out for a walk earlier this week.

The kidnapping and rape happened Tuesday night, Oct. 4, at approximately 8 p.m. as the victim was walking along Delaney Creek Drive, just west of Falkenburg Road.

The 34-year-old woman was grabbed from behind and forced into a wooded area by the suspect, Devarian M. Thomas, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

Thomas, 23, reportedly then forced the woman into a nearby apartment complex, Circle at Crosstown, where he sexually battered her twice in a women's restroom near the pool. The suspect threatened to kill the woman if she told anyone, detectives said.

Crime scene investigators later processed the crime scene and were able to obtain physical evidence linking Thomas to this crime, according to the sheriff’s office.

“This was a very violent and disgusting attack,” said Detective Larry McKinnon. “It was also totally random, which is unusual because in most of these types of attacks the attacker has some kind of relationship to the victim.”

McKinnon urged women to exercise caution when out alone.

“We strongly encourage them not to walk alone," he said. "Always take a walking buddy. This attacker was able to pull the woman into the woods, and no one could see what was happening.”

Thomas is facing three counts of sexual battery, kidnapping and three counts relating to violation of his probation.

Thomas lives at 1909 Garden Bower Circle, less than a mile from where the attack occurred. He was sentenced to five years for robbery home invasion in Panama City in 2006, according to jail records.

Records show he was released in December 2010 and required to serve 15 years probation.

Does Latisha Sykes in the comment above live in the apartments that the suspect took the girl too? Because a lot of girls in those apartments said he used to hang out by the pool and would say his girlfriend lives in the apartments and he lives with his girlfriend in those apartments. If this isn't even true...then....his word is pretty much already shot.

well apparently hes already lying if he told girls in the apartments that he lives in those apartments..when in reality he lived less then a mile away...somewhere other than those apartments!

Latisha - the victim needs the prayers not your "boo". The crime scene investigators didn't find "black man" physical evidence - they found your boo's physical evidence. Let's hope he gets what he deserves this time and is kept in prison.

lol yeahhhhh buddy "shante" thats why he was arrested. lol they obviously had evidence... watch your friends pal... they are BAD!! Im glad you think its ok to rape people and traumatize them for the rest of their life.. hope it happens to you then youll have sympathy for others around you instead of the predators you think are good people. one, learn how to speak english, two stop making it look like everyone is racist. its just coincedental that a black male freakin raped her. chill out and get a life!! :)
Stephanie October 10, 2011 at 09:10 PM
oh and p.s. pray for the victim that was takin advantage of. I cant believe somebody would think its okay... aftert he police have all their evidence... they no how to do their jobs. its funny that people think police lie or they did something wrong when they do this crap everyday.. for years! They NO what they are doing.. devarian obviously didnt have a good enough lie to come up with to get him out of trouble.. just give up... he was caught doing the wrong thing.. its not ok to kidnap someone and rape them. im sorry but you are crazy if you think its ok! I have no sympathy for him.. i hope he gets the max sentance. he deserves nothing but life in prison!!!

How do I "know where he stay"? I watched the deputies take this scumbag into custody. He was living at the apartment complex where the rape was commited with his "girlfriend" whom I assume is Latisha Sykes. I hope the leasing office evicts your ass. Your "BOO" hopefully will get the 30 years to life he is facing. And nobody pinned this on him. Since your "BOO" was in state prison, he had to submit his DNA sample. His DNA will pin him to this disgusting crime. Have fun talking to your "BOO" through glass! Oh, and happy apartment hunting!

Stephanie October 10, 2011 at 09:33 PM
Wow! Thats unbelievable... i cant believe there are people like that in this world. Its sad and scary!
Stephanie October 11, 2011 at 04:42 PM
I feel the same way... Ignorant people drive me crazy. Its a shame they choose to stick up for their stupid "boos" that cause all these crimes.

Per HCSO, the guy was on probation for: Robbery Home Invasion - Violation of Probation Robbery with a Firearm - Violation of Probation Grand Theft Firearm - Violation of Probation I live in this complex and I'm wondering how this guy was allowed to live here (yes I know, people sneak others in all the time). As far as rapists go, 'it' should be removed...plain and simple.

I don't think he was allowed, as I'm sure the leasing office never knew he was here. He was living with his girlfriend, but I hope the leasing office kicks her out. Because of her actions of allowing a convicted felon to live here, an innocent woman was raped.
Uncle Jason October 14, 2011 at 11:41 AM
You're right, they need to kick her out immediately. We pay a hefty price here not to live in the ghetto but this person brought the trash to us. Above all, my heart goes out to the victim and I'll be praying for her.
DJMedik91 October 16, 2011 at 03:52 AM
Yes we do pay higher to live in a safer area. I'll be pissed if she isn't evicted, because I'm sure her friends are all the same. I'm almost positive the victim will be moving out. I would. My heart goes out to her, and I wish her the best.

Yes he was so sweet when he broke into someones house with a weapon and robbed the occupants. Definitely a stand up citizen and someone I would love to have as a neighbor. He will get his in prison!
Stephanie October 20, 2011 at 03:01 AM
