As County Reconsiders After-School Care, Program Running At 10 Centers

The Brandon Recreation Center on East Sadie Street is one center offering an after-school program now as details get worked out on an Aug. 24 vote.

As county officials work to jumpstart after-school programs following a U-turn by the Hillsborough County Commissioners, who voted last month voted to eliminate the program, after-school care is already up and running at 10 regional county recreation centers.

After-school care is available at the Brandon Recreation Center, Ruskin Recreation Center, Gardenville Recreation Center in Gibsonton, Winston Recreation Center in Tampa, All People’s Life Center in Tampa, University Area Recreation Center in Tampa, Northdale Recreation Center in Tampa, Thonotosassa Recreation Center in Thonotosassa, Keystone Recreation Center in Odessa and the Westchase Recreation Center in Tampa.

The Hillsborough County Commissioners voted unanimously Aug. 24 to support some form of after-school care at its recreation centers, and to keep more of those centers open, but the glass is half-empty for those who fought the hardest to keep the centers open and the program alive.
