Brandon-Area Democrats Welcome Beckner, Civil Rights Speaker

County politics and civil rights will be on the agenda tonight, Oct. 11, when the East Hillsborough County Democratic Club holds its monthly meeting at Barnacles, 926 Providence Road. The meeting is slated for 6:30-8:30 p.m. 

District 6 Hillsborough County Commissioner Kevin Beckner will be on hand to discuss significant developments in county politics.

Beckner won his seat in 2008, defeating an incumbent commissioner in his first try. Since then, Becker has addressed transportation, clamping down on pill mills, protecting the environment, helping disadvantaged youth and revamping Hillsborough County’s frayed infrastructure and economy.

Cathy James of the Hillsborough County Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgendered and Allies (GLBTA) Democratic Caucus will also address the group, providing an update on issues affecting the civil rights of gay and other Americans.  

“We are going to have a gay old time at the East Hillsborough County Democrats Club at the meeting.  I can't wait to share the advances the GLBT community has made since January 2009 in Hillsborough County, Florida, and the U.S.," James said.

 Attendees are also asked to bring a bag or bags of candy to the meeting as the club will be hosting a treat station at the “14th Annual Halloween Horribles Parade” sponsored by Center Place Fine Arts & Civic Association in Brandon Sunday, Oct. 30.
