Charlie Crist Spreads the Word, 'Proud' To Be a Democrat

In a tweet sent from the White House Christmas Party, former Florida governor Charlie Crist, then a Republican and formerly an independent, announces his decision to join the Democratic Party.

Apparently, all Charlie Crist wanted for Christmas was to be a Democrat.

News and social media outlets have been spreading the word that the former Florida governor, who served as a Republian and then ran for the state Senate as an independent candidate, tweeted the news himself, from the White House Christmas Party on Dec. 7.

"Proud and honored to join the Democratic Party in the home of [the] president," Crist said in his tweet, which included a picture of himself, holding his Florida Voter Registration Application.

The Washington Post reports in a blog that the move "was widely anticipated, especially in advance of a potential 2014 run for his old office."

Crist, who this year endorsed President Barack Obama for reelection, reportedly was the frontrunner for the state's open Senate seat in 2010. Crist in the primary ran as a Rebublican and lost to Sen. Marco Rubio, who now holds the seat.

After the primary, Crist in 2010 switched to running as an independent and lost in what became a three-way race with the Democratic candidate, then-Rep. Kendrick Meek.
