Hillsborough Democrats Talk 'Obamacare,' Parade, Nash, Belcher and Gibbons

The Hillsborough County Democratic Club addresses "How to Talk About the ACA," Sam Gibbons work on health care reform, the club's participation in the Greater Brandon 4th of July Parade and the campaign kickoffs for Mark Nash and Elizabeth Belcher.

 

The Hillsborough County Democratic Party, in a series of online updates, addresses last month's Supreme Court ruling on the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, commonly known as "Obamacare," as well as details for participation in the Greater Brandon Fourth of July Parade and the campaign kick-offs for candidates Mark Nash and Elizabeth Belcher.

"Unless you have been in a deep coma, on the moon, or under a rock, you know that on Thursday [June 28] the Supreme Court found the Affordable Care Act — also known as 'Obamacare' — to be constitutional," the online post reads.

Recognizing that "the landmark decision is already galvanizing both sides of the political spectrum," the party offers links to resources that it has determined best explain the facts of the situation, including: "Explaining the Affordabe Care Act to a 5-Year-Old" and "What Does the Supreme Court Health Care Ruling Mean for Me?"

Also included is a report on how Sam Gibbons, "the 17-term Democratic Congressman from Tampa Bay, fought for healthcare reform for more than 30 years," according to his niece-in-law Jane Gibbons.

Also posted is a link to a Meet the Press video of House minority leader Nancy Pelosi responding to questions posed by interviewer David Gregory.

The Hillsborough County Democratic Club is planning for the following events:

  • A training camp for speakers and activists to learn about "how to talk about key issues during this election cycle." The event is scheduled for July 21, from 1 to 5 p.m., with additional events to be posted next week.
  • The East HillsboroughCunty Democratic Club will be marching in the Greater Brandon Fourth of July Parade. The Northwest Hillsborough Democratic Club will be marching in the Lutz parade. And walkers for the Kevin Beckner campaign will be walking in both the Brandon and the Temple Terrace parades.
  • Mark Nash, a candidate for the District 4 seat on the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners is holding a campaign kick-off at the Barn Theatre at Winthrop on July 6, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. The Barn is at 11349 Bloomingale Ave., between Watson and Providence roads.
  • A meet- and-greet for Elizabeth Belcher, candidate for the District 24 state Senate seat, now held by Ronda Storms, who is running for Hillsborough County Property Appraiser, is scheduled for July 8 at 614 Sportsman Drive in Seffner. RSVP by July 6 by calling 813-654-5348.
