Connecting Dead-End Water Lines Aims To Improve Water Quality

The Lithia Pinecrest Road project in Brandon aims to improve water quality in the area of Hummingbird Lane and Orangewalk Drive. A public meeting to discuss the project is slated for Dec. 15 at Burns Middle School.

Brandon residents are invited to a Dec. 15 public meeting to discuss a project designed to improve water quality along Lithia Pinecrest Road, east of Lumsden Road.

Hillsborough County Public Utilities Department staff will discuss the $350,000 project, which aims to construct 2,500 feet of 6-inch water pipeline along Lithia Pincrest, Hummingbird Lane and Orangewalk Drive.

Under the project, two lines, which now dead-end on the two neighborhood streets, will instead be connected to an existing pipeline on the east side of Lithia Pinecrest.

The new pipeline sections will allow for residents along Hummingbird and Orangewalk to choose to connect to the county’s utility system. Residents currently get their drinking water from water wells.

The project also calls for four fire hydrants.

Construction is expected to begin in January and take six months to complete.

The work is part of the Countywide Potable Water Main/Distribution Lines Renewal and Replacement Project, a longterm program aimed to improve water quality by connecting certain lines that now dead end. Water in these lines can stagnate, causing poor odor and taste. Utility crews must regularly flush the dead-end lines, using large amounts of water and labor.
