Reader's Spotlight: County to Provide Dental Care to Disadvantaged 2nd-Graders

The pilot program is intended to prevent tooth loss and decay.

Under a pilot health program in Hillsborough County, second-grade students from Title 1 schools will receive free preventive dental care.

According to an public information office for the Florida Department of Health of Hillsborough County, the county will provide these disadvantaged students with dental sealants, fluoride varnish and oral health education.

To date, more than 450 students have received services from a mobile dental clinics at one of eight elementary schools in Hillsborough County. Plans are in the works to expand the program next year to 16 schools.
