State Rep To Discuss Utilities, Insurance Reform Efforts With Local Democrats

State Rep. Dwight Dudley will be the guest speaker at the July 9 meeting of the East Hillsborough County Democratic Club.

State Rep. Dwight Dudley, D-St. Petersburg, a first-year legislator who has quickly become known for his consumer advocacy efforts, will be the guest speak at the Tuesday, July 9 monthly meeting of the East Hillsborough County Democratic Club.

The meeting will take place at 6:30 p.m. at Barnacles Restaurant, 926 Providence Rd., Brandon.

Dudley will discuss legislative developments concerning utilities and insurance reform.

Dudley recently criticized the Florida Public Service Commission for refusing his request to study the cost of the proposed Levy County nuclear plant. The plant is estimated to cost $24.7 billion, making it the most expensive nuclear plant in U.S. history.

Earlier this year, Dudley filed an unsuccessful bill to make seats on the PSC elected positions, arguing that utilities have undue influence over the PSC.

Dudley also championed expanding health coverage to more than 1 million uninsured, low-income Floridians, a measure that failed in the Legislature when hardline conservatives dug in their heels.

Members attending the meeting are asked to bring food and toiletry items to donate to the Brandon Emergency Care Help Organization.
