2011 Relay For Life Updates for Brandon, Bloomingdale, FishHawk, Plant City, Riverview and Seffner

We'll update you weekly on what has become the major local fundraiser of the year in terms of people participating and money raised: the American Cancer Society's grassroots Relay For Life.

The American Cancer Society's Relay For Life season is underway and proceeds raised so far from the six events in Eastern Hillsborough County have collectively raised close to $250,000.

Indeed, the march is on to find a cure, as evidenced by this week’s growth in Relay For Life numbers, with one Relay, in Riverview, topping the $60,000 mark for the first time, with FishHawk and Plant City both topping the $50,000 mark. Bloomingdale more than doubled its monies raised over a one-week time period and Riverview is the first Relay to hit 800 participant (Plant City is four participant shy of the 800-mark).

The Brandon Relay hits its own milestones this week, topping both 500 participants (502) and $25,500 ($25,596.41). The Seffner/Dover Relay increased its monies raised 62 percent, to $8,037.45. It is the only Relay of the six to be held at a middle school, Burnett, and not a high school.
