Brandon, Newsome Set To Confer Degrees Today (May 30)

Thousands of degrees will be awarded today and tomorrow, May 30 and 31, at commencement exercises for eight Hillsborough County public schools, including Brandon, East Bay, Lennard and Newsome high schools.

An anticipated 3,480 degrees are anticipate to be rewarded to graduating seniors at those four high schools, along with graduates from Chamberlain, Hillsborough, Jefferson and Sickles high schools.

Of the total, 643 degrees are expected to be awarded as well to students at both the South County Career Center and the D.W. Waters Career Center.

The eight high schools are holding their commencement exercises at the Florida State Fairgrounds Expo Hall, starting today, May 30, with Newsome at 9:30 a.m. and Brandon at 8 p.m.

In all, the School District of Hillsborough County has announced its anticipation to confer 12,594 degrees this year, starting with the exceptional student education centers May 29.

Hillsborough's graduation season runs through June 7.

The largest graduating classes are from Alonso (583), Wharton (578), Steinbrenner (573), Bloomingdale (571), Plant (571), Durant (570), Newsome (525), Riverview (525) and Strawberry Crest (522).

At the collegiate level, more than 6,000 degrees were awarded to University of South Florida students in Tampa, St. Petersburg and Sarasota-Manatee. The university's four days of commencement exercises were held May 3, 4, 5 and 10.

Meanwhile, more than 800 students graduated in Hillsborough Community College's 44th Annual Commencement Exercise, held May 3, also the Florida State Fairgrounds Expo Hall.
