For the most part, bright skies marked the start of the first day of school but that won't likely hold up for the ride home for students of the nation's eighth-largest school district. The National Weather Service in Ruskin says there’s a good chance afternoon thunderstorms will hit in time for the final bell of the first day of school for the Hillsborough County School District.

Scattered showers were likely to become “numerous this afternoon,” said Eric Oglesby, a meteorologist with the weather service. Oglesby said rain chances will remain high tomorrow, but will taper off into the 40 percent range on Thursday and drop more over the weekend.

Today’s high will be around 80, Oglesby said.

While storms are likely to make the first week back to school a bit soggy, forecasters have their eyes on a bigger concern. Tropical Depression 9 is currently forming east of the Dominican Republic.

“It’s still a depression, but the track of that is still very much up in the air,” Oglesby said. “We’ll have to watch that for the next several days.”

If the depression continues to develop — and  it will become Tropical Storm Isaac.
