Armwood Football: Hawks Face Gainesville for Region Title Tonight

The Armwood Hawks travel to Gainesville tonight, Nov. 30, for the FHSAA Class 6A-Region 2 final. Arwmood advanced after last week's 9-7 revenge defeat of the Hillsborough High Terriers, who beat the Hawks 3-0 earlier in the season.

The Armwood Hawks travel to Gainesville today, Nov. 30, with hopes to bring home the Class 6A-Region 2 title.

Armwood advances to the third round of 2012 Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) post-season play after beating Hillsborough High (9-7) last week.

Armwood (9-3) faces the undefeated Gainesville Hurricanes (12-0), ranked nationally and in the state at 71 and 3, respectively, according to MaxPreps.com.

Meanwhile, the Hawks are ranked 304 in the nation and 21 in the state, according to MaxPreps.com.

The Hawks this year beat Brandon, Tampa Bay Tech, Leto, Jefferson, Sickles, Strawberry Crest and King. In post-season play, the Hawks beat Largo (10-6) and Hillsborough (9-7).

Armwood's three losses this season were to American Heritage (28-36), Hillsborough (0-3) and Plant (19-20).

The Nov. 30 contest kicks off 7:30 p.m. at Gainesville High, 1900 N.W. 13th Street, in Gainesville.

This season, players and fans have taken to wearing black T-Shirts with white letters that read: "We're Still Here." It's in reference to the ruling that this year stripped Armwood of last year's state title, the same title it's working hard to win again this year.

The Florida High School Athletic Association in June held Armwood football accountable for using ineligible players and then stripped the team of its 2011 Class 6A state championship. The Hawks' 2010 state runner-up status was negated as well.

According to a Forbes sports & leisure report, the school had to "send back the trophies associated with those appearances" and the FHSAA "also fine the school $12,743, and made it forfeit 26 wins."

The Hillsborough County School Board on Sept. 11 officially adopted a new policy affecting student-athletes who transfer to new schools. (See, Armwood Sanctions Lead to New Hillsborough Student-Athlete Policy.)
