Back-To-School Countdown (Day 2): 2011 Florida Sales Tax Holiday

This is the second posting in a 41-day effort that gives you news you can use as you count down the days before the opening bell of the 2011-12 school year. The first day of school in the Hillsborough County School District is August 23.

The Brandon Patch Back-To-School Countdown proceeds with this Day 2 report on news you can use as you get ready for the opening bell of the first day of classes.

Teachers in the Hillsborough County School District go back to school August 15 to prepare for the first day of school for students, August 23.

Less than two weeks earlier, from 12:01 a.m. August 12 through 11:59 p.m. August 14, shoppers in Florida can take advantage of the 2011 Sales Tax Holiday timed to coincide for back-to-school shoppers.

The Sales Tax Holiday law states that:

 “No sales tax shall be collected on the sale of clothing, wallets, or bags, including handbags, backpacks, fanny packs, and diaper bags, briefcases, suitcases, and other garment bags, having a sales price of $75 or less, or on sales of certain school supplies having a sales price of $15 or less.”

Clothing exempt (and not exempt) from taxes:

“. . . any article of wearing apparel, including all footwear (except skis, swim fins, roller blades and skates) . . . "

“. . . does not include watches, watchbands, jewelry, umbrellas, handkerchiefs or sporting equipment.”

School supplies exempt from taxes:

“. . .pens, pencils, erasers, crayons, notebooks, notebook filler paper, legal pads, binders, lunch boxes, construction paper, markers, folders, poster board, composition books, poster paper, scissors, cellophane tape, glue, paste, rulers, computer disks, protractors, compasses and calculators.”
