Brandon Area Now Part Of Four School Board Voting Districts

The Greater Brandon area will now be split into four different districts when elections are held for the Hillsborough County School Board.

Following a series of the school board adopted new voting districts Oct. 4. The vote means new voting boundaries for districts 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. The remaining two districts — 6 and 7 — are elected at large by the entire county.

Federal law requires states and counties revisit their electoral boundaries every 10 years to make sure election districts are equal in population and minorities are represented.

The school board vote comes on the heels of the county commission’s decision to revamp voting boundaries for the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners. That controversial vote along State Road 60.

In the new school board voting map, the Greater Brandon area lies in Districts 2, 3, 4 and 5.

The districts are currently represented by Candy Olson (District 2), Jack Lamb (District 3), Doretha Edgecomb (District 5) and Stacy White (District 4). Previously, Brandon was not included in District 3.

The revisions will not affect which schools students attend, bus stops, or the availability of transportation to particular schools.

The new voting boundaries have to be approved by the federal Department of Justice before they can take effect next year.
