Camden Allen White Remembered, Brandon High Traffic Lights Installed

Near the entrance to Brandon High, where a 15-year-old student lost his life walking to school in 2006, new traffic lights are operational.

Near the roadside memorial for Camden Allen White, who was struck and killed Dec. 4, 2006 in a crosswalk at Victoria and Meade streets in front of Brandon High School, stands a newly created traffic signal, opened in time for the 2013-14 school year.

"It is a fully operational signal now," said Hillsborough County spokesperson Steve Valdez, "where before all it was was a striped crosswalk."

The aim is for "pedestrian safety" and "to better maintain the flow of vehicles during school drop-off and pick-up times," he added.

Putting in place the new traffic lights fell under the School Safety Program and work began about six months ago, Valdez said.

White, 15, was on his way to school and struck by a car driven by a Kami Bell, a 22-year-old substitute teacher, who was charged with a civil infraction, according to a Tampa Bay Times report

Today, a roadside memorial for White remains.

As noted in a June 26, 2012 Brandon Patch report on intersection improvements, as stated by Brandon High parent and alumnus Karen Rodriguez: "When you see that memorial, how can you not slow down?"
