Durant Football: Undefeated Season Advances With East Bay Win

The undefeated Durant High School Cougars, under head coach Mike Gottman, beat the East Bay Indians on Oct. 26 to make it an 8-0 season. The game was played on East Bay's turf in Gibsonton.

Durant's magical football season continued last night, Oct. 26, with a 28-3 win against East Bay, making it eight wins for the undefeated Cougars, which is reported to be the school's best season record ever.

Durant High School's head football coach, Mike Gottman, led his team to their fourth Class 7A-District 8 title with the aid of 5-foot-10 fullback Jamarlon Hamilton, No. 10, who reportedly carried the ball 18 times for 133 yards and two touchdowns (1 and 37 yards).

This week's victory came after last week's win (38-28) against the Newsome Wolves. The Cougars have two season games left, against Riverview away (Nov. 2) and King at home (Nov. 9).

"Every week I just want to put together a good plan we can execute, and go out and win a game," Gottman said after the Newsome win. "I try to keep them focused on the challenge at hand."

East Bay faced the Cougars after a stunning upset (24-12) against Plant City on Oct. 18. Meanwhile, the Plant City Raiders on Oct. 26 recovered with a 2-point win (22-20) win against the Brandon High Eagles at McLane Stadium in Brandon.

The East Bay Indians this season beat Lennard (43-9) and Riverview (33-14). East Bay's other losses were to Steinbrenner (0-23), Bloomingdale (14-21), Newsome (22-30) and Gaither (18-33).

The Cougars this season have amassed 272 points, averaging out to roughly 34 points a game.

This is Gottman's 10th year at Durant. "He's a great coach and he requires a lot of our players, first to be student athletes, and also to be gentlemen," Bowden has said about Gottman. "We don't get a lot of penalties, these kids are disciplined."
