Aspiring young musicians will get a chance to try their hand at a variety of musical instruments this weekend when the Florida Academy of Performing Arts offers a free workshop for young children.

The free Music Makers workshop is set for 9:30-11:30 a.m. Aug. 13 at , 402 Oakfield Drive.

It’s the first of what the store hopes to make a monthly event, said spokesperson Debbie Evans. Music Showcase is currently finalizing its fall schedule.

“It’s going to be like an instrument petting zoo,” Evans said. “It’s a way for children to try out an instrument they may have had an interest in but maybe have not had a chance to use. They may find out it’s something they continue to want to play.”

They event will also some fun music-related activities for youngsters like constructing a guitar from a tissue box or making a paper tambourine, Evans added.

Evans said the store often gets calls from parents who would like to see their child start in music but are not sure what instrument to try.

“This is a great way to get them started. It will be a fun day but they will also be introduced to the different instruments.”

A musical education is more important than ever today, Evans said. Faced with budget cutbacks, music programs are often among the first to go at public schools, she said.

“Music is fun but it also really helps youngsters with their homework and learning. It helps with math because music deals with counting notes. It also teaches self-discipline and keeps them motivated because they can see results every week.”
