Eagles Football: Friday Night Lights at Brandon High (Sept. 14)

The Brandon High School Eagles at home on Sept. 14 faced the Freedom High School Patriots. Last-minute plays determined the outcome of the game as life in the stands featured all the pomp and circumstance of high school life.

 

After holding steady with a three-quarter lead, last-minute plays in overtime led to a Freedom High School victory over the Brandon Eagles at home Sept. 14.

It was the first home game of the season for the Eagles, who lost to the Patriots (14-20) after a failed kick in the final seconds of the fourth quarter and a fumble in overtime.

The Eagles came off a bye week having lost to the Armwood Hawks (0-55) the week before, in the Sept. 1 season opener. The Eagles beat the Blake Yellow Jackets in a preseason game Aug. 24 (20-6). 

In the stands Sept. 14, spirits were high as the Friday night lights of Friday night football shone on a community of fans, including a band booster parent on the eve of her wedding, a band director in her fifth year of staging halftime shows at the McLane Stadium and a Brandon High alumnus shooting pictures from the sidelines.

For Freedom, the night's play marked the New Tampa school's first victory of the season. It came on the heels of a missed 20-yard field goal in the waning seconds of the fourth quarter by Brandon kicker Willie Burkhart.

In overtime, Brandon had the opening drive, when running back Cyrus Dooley fumbled, leading to a 1-yard winning touchdown by the Patriots.
