Gearing-Up Events for Teachers, Adults: Back-To-School Countdown (Day 21)

PTA presidents and school principals, as well as new teachers and veteran teachers with new school assignments, will be in attendance at events throughout Hillsborough County over the next two weeks to get prepped and psyched for the new school year.

The Brandon Patch Back-To-School Countdown proceeds with this Day 21 report, offering news of interset as the first day of classes approaches.

Teachers in the Hillsborough County School District go back to school Aug. 15 to prepare for the first day of classes, Aug. 23.

The Hillsborough County School District is gearing up for the first day of school with a series of events designed to get the adults ready to meet and greet the next round of students.

The school district is a large one — the eighth-largest in the nation — and care and coordination is necessary to get the troops in formation for the onslaught of kids ready to tackle another year of schooling.

This drive is shared as well by organizations that involve the concerns of parents, businesses and community interests.

Toward that end:

  • Principals and PTA presidents will meet together Aug. 11 for breakfast at Hillsborough High School at 7:30 a.m. After the breakfast, principals and supervisors will conduct their own meeting.
  • The Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce will host its annual New Teacher Breakfast on Aug. 18 at Riverview High School, starting at 7:30 a.m. This breakfast is for both teachers new to the profession and for veteran teachers who are new to schools that serve the Greater Brandon/Riverview and SouthShore communities.
  • The East Tampa new teacher welcome breakfast will be held Aug. 18 at 8 a.m. at Middleton High School.
  • The University of South Florida Latino Scholarship awards ceremony is set for Aug. 18 at 6 p.m. at the USF concert hall.
  • On Aug. 19 at 2 p.m., school district employees, family and friends will gather at Newsome High School for a retirement celebration for Rebecca Fitzgerald, whose last position in the school district was as principal of Newsome High in Lithia. Before opening the school, she was the first female principal at Brandon High School.
  • The 12th Annual Back-To-School Kickoff and Community Fair gets under way at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church on Aug. 20 at 11 a.m.
