Graduation Season Kicks Off Today (May 3)

Congratulate your graduates, the 2013 graduation season begins today, May 3, with commencement exercises at Hillsborough Community College and the University of South Florida. Hillsborough public schools follow suit later this month and next.

 

Thousands of degrees will be awarded today and tomorrow, May 3 and 4, at commencement exercises for both Hillsborough Community College and the University of South Florida.

More than 6,000 degrees will be awarded to USF students in Tampa, St. Petersburg and Sarasota-Manatee alone. The university's four days of commencement exercises begin 1:30 p.m. today, at the USF Sun Dome on the Tampa campus, for undergradutes from the College of Arts & Sciences School of Social Sciences.

Meanwhile, more than 800 students are expected to participate in today's 44th Annual Commencement Exercise of Hillsborough Community College, set to begin with the 10 a.m. graduation processional at the Florida State Fairgounds Expo Hall.

According to school officials, more than 4,200 HCC students have completed the requirements for graduation. Graduates include those set to receive associate degrees in the arts, science and applied sciences, as well as college-credit and postsecondary adult vocational certificates.

Coming later this month is the start of the graduation season for Hillsborough County public schools. Ceremonies begin with the exceptional centers May 30 and, a day later, Brandon, Chamberlain, Hillsborough and Newsome high schools, along with the district's two career centers.

2013 Graduation: Hillsborough Community College

  • Commencement speaker is U.S. Under Secretary of Education Martha J. Kanter.
  • Youngest graduates are three 17-year-olds, who completed their associates in arts degrees through the dual-enrollment program: Oyun-Undrak Yeruultsengel, Debra Lentz and Kaylen Mandry. Dual-enrollment allows high school students to take college courses.
  • The oldest graduate is 73-year-old John Jardin.
  • Hillsborough Community College serves mor than 47,000 students annually on campuses in Brandon, Plant City, Ruskin (SouthShore) and Plant City as well as on Dale Mabry Highway in Ybor City.

2013 Graduation: University of South Florida

  • Eight commencement ceremonies are scheduled over the course of four days, beginning with May 3 and 4 at the USF Sun Dome on the Tampa campus (see chart and bulleted-items below).
  • And estimated 6,062 were to be awarded, including 5,140 for USF Tamap alone (3,924 bachelors, 1,018 masters and 198 specialists). The numbers for USF St. Petersburg and USF Sarasota-Manatee are 454 and 290, respectively.
  • USF System President Judy Genshaft is set to preside over all eight ceremonies. Also announcing the names of graduates will be Stuart Silverman, dean of the Honors College, and Roger Brindley, associate vice president for Global Academic Programs, for the undergraduate and graduate ceremonies, respectively.
  • The youngest graduate is Anthony J. Schryer II, 19, who earned a bachelor of science in computer science.
  • The oldest graduate is Joan V. Schoenling, 74, with a master's degree in adult education.
  • Fourteen students have been identified as King O'Neal Scholard candiates, for having a cumulative grade-point average of 4.0. The award is named in honor of charter USF graduates Lucas King and Evelyn O'Neal.
  • The USF Alumni Association has named George Papadeas the Outstanding Graduate for USF Tampa. He graduates with a bachlor of science in marketing.
  • Also set to be awarded: an honorary doctor of science degree to University of Missouri professor Jerry Atwood; the President's Global Leadership Award to INTO Founder Andrew Colin; and an honorary degree of medicine to former USF Trustee Rhea Law.

  • Commencement cermonies for USF St. Petersburg and USF Sarasota-Manatee are scheduled for Sunday, May 5. The USF St. Petersburg ceremony is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Mahaffey Theater. The USF Sarasoata-Manatee ceremony is scheduled for 2 p.m. in the Bradenton Area Convention Center.
  • The USF Morsani College of Medicine is set to confer medical degrees Friday, May 10, at the Straz Center.
