Hillsborough School Board To Recognize Perfect SAT and ACT Scores, Armwood Art Teacher and More

At their April 14 meeting, Hillsborough School Board members will recognize art educator Greg Manley of Armwood High, five students with perfect SAT or ACT scores, National Merit honorees and the Bucs "Community Quarterback" recipient.

For years Greg Manley has taught art at Armwood High School and at the Center Place Fine Arts & Civic Association, where he serves also as a board member.

Today, April 14, he gets recognized by the Hillsborough County School Board for being named “Arts Educator of the Year” at the Seventh Annual Brush Strokes Awards for Excellence in the Arts ceremony in October.

Brush Strokes is sponsored by the Greater Brandon Arts Council and recognizes creative endeavors in the arts throughout the Tampa Bay area

Also at today’s meeting, School Board members will recognize:

  • Five students who scored a perfect score on either the SAT or ACT.
  • The recipient of the 2011 Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Community Quarterback Award, given annually to citizens “who have made extraordinary contributions to the community through volunteer work.” The recipient receives an commemorative football and a $2,000 donation to the recipient’s charity of choice.
  • Sixty-three students who earned the National Merit Finalist designation, one of the highest honors a high school student can achieve. According to Frances Otero, Hillsborough’s supervisor of guidance services, only the top one-half of one percent of the number of juniors in the nation who take the PSAT earn this honor.
  • Fourteen students who earned the National Achievement Scholarship recognition for outstanding black American high school students.
  • Eighteen students who earned the National Hispanic Recognition honor.

The national awards are designated by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation and given to college-bound seniors who have outstanding scores on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) that students take in their junior year.
