Last Call for 2011 Brandon High Hall of Fame Nominees

The Brandon High School Alumni Association runs the annual Hall of Fame recognition program for alma mater graduates at least 10 years out of high school.

Time runs out today to submit nominees for another round of inductees into the Brandon High School Alumni Association Hall of Fame.

Instituted in 2004, the Brandon High School Alumni Association launched the recognition program with six charter members: Sherril “Sherri” Aversa (’85); Jose “Joe” Perez, a former faculty member and former principal of Durant High School; George R. Jurch (’52); State Attorney Mark Ober (’69) and Marvin J. Lopez, former and long-time president of the alumni association (’55).

To date, there have been six classes of inductees, with no inductees named in 2010. Hall of Famers number 35 (see list below) and include the namesakes of Stowers Elementary School, Mulrennan and Randall middle schools; and Lennard High School.

Hillsborough County Sheriff Dave Gee (’77) made the wall in 2005, the same year as Phillip Mook (’49), the namesake of the Mook Art Gallery at the Center Place Fine Arts & Civic Association, and Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections and former Hillsborough County School Superintendent Earl Lennard.

Former state Senate President Tom Lee made the wall in 2006, as did this year’s Honorary Mayor of Brandon Lisa Rodriguez (’75), a year later.

Also a Hall of Famer is Brandon High School’s Head Wrestling Coach Russ Cozart, under whose tenure the team held a 35-year winning streak . The team this school year earned its 22nd state title and 11th state title in a row, with Cozart at the helm for 21 of those state titles. He was named this year’s top coach by the St. Petersburg Times.

The alumni association accepts nominations for the annual award from the public. Nominations submitted through May 31 each year are considered for that year's award. It is not necessary to re-submit an application each year; nominees will be considered in subsequent years as well. Applications can be submitted by a spouse, friend or relative.

To be nominated, a potential honoree must have graduated at least 10 years before the nomination date. In some cases, former and current faculty members are recognized as well. Potential hall- of-famers must show a distinguished record in business, military service, or professional, philanthropic, civic, political, sports, social or education endeavors. If a candidate did not graduate due to extenuating circumstances, the alumni association's selection committee will consider the nomination on its merits. The award also can be granted posthumously.
