New Principals for 6 Schools Noted on 146-Item School Board Agenda

Nine students with 13 years of perfect attendance to be recognized June 14, along with the district as the College Board's Beacon Award recipient for AP effort. Valrico Elementary and Newsome High get new principals.

New principals for six schools, recognition of nine high school graduates with perfect attendance since kindergarten and an $80 million line of credit are among the items on tap for the June 14 meeting of the Hillsborough County School Board.

Today’s meeting begins 3 p.m. at the Raymond O. Shelton Administrative Center, 901 East Kennedy Blvd. School officials post the agenda online, along with supplementary materials. Here’s a quick overview of some budget  

  • Britni Baker of Armwood High School is one of nine recently graduated seniors who never missed a day of school since the first day of kindergarten. The chart below notes all nine recipients:

  • The supervisor of single gender programs, a new position in the school district, will be filled today. The position was created “to oversee the curricular programs, professional development and academic support” for Hillsborough’s single-gender classrooms and schools. Also to be appointed are school officials to fill three positions, as noted in the chart below: supervisor of middle and secondary reading, to replace Lynn Dougherty-Underwood, who has been promoted; and supervisor of secondary science, to replace Larry Plank, who also has been promoted. Also to be appointed is a replacement for Lynn Fell, who resigned in March from her position as assistant director of grants and research.
  • The College Board Beacon Award is presented each year to the one school district in the nation “that has made a profound achievement in using AP (Advanced Placement) Exams “to create a culture focused on college readiness.” According to school officials, Hillsborough was the nation’s top district in number of students earning AP scores of 3 or better. The number of students amounted to 1,814. At the same time, participation in AP courses and exams rose by annual rate of 19 percent. The College Board administers both the AP and SAT exams. Elia, with a group of district staff, principals and AP teachers, are scheduled to present at the AP annual conference award ceremony in San Francisco this summer. East Bay High’s salutatorian, Kasandra Ballenza, will make the introductions.
  • New principals will be appointed at Bing, Clark, Lowry, Pinecrest and Valrico elementary schools and at Newsome High School. The chart below notes the outgoing princpals:

  • Hillsborough County Superintendent of Schools MaryEllen Elia will be asking the School Board to approve the request for a line of credit not to exceed $80 million, similar to a request put forth last year. The is “to finance any operational cash-flow deficits in anticipation of tax receipts pursuant” to state law, according to the request.
