New School Needs A Name; Person, Place Or Thing?

Hillsborough County school officials are getting set to launch another school next year, which means nominations for names are now open.

Next to the school in Ruskin that bears the name of Brandon High School and University of South Florida graduate Earl Lennard— the former superintendent of schools who oversaw the Hillsborough County school district's massive expansion in the 90's and beyond — lies a school under construction awaiting a name.

Nominations for the name of that school, now known as "Elementary School A," are being accepted through Monday, Sept. 9. The deadline to submit nominations is 4 p.m.

The upcoming school is on East Shell Point Road in Ruskin, adjacent to Lennard High School. it is set to open in 2014.

Name recommendations should be sent to Chris Farkas, area leadership director for Area 8 schools, at 2807 John Sherman Way, Ruskin, Fl, 33570. His email is christopher.farkas@sdhc.k12.fl.us. His office number is 813-658-1970.

Name suggestions received by the deadline will be included in the packet of materials sent to school board members, who are expected to vote on the school's name at the board's Sept. 24 meeting.

The nominations will be included in other names that have been suggested over the years.

According to school board policy, "schools shall be named for individuals who have rendered outstanding service to public education, such as U.S. presidents, school board members, educators, outstanding citizens and geographic locations."
