Nine Brandon Wrestlers Advance in FHSAA Class 3A State Tournament

Russ Cozart's Brandon High School wrestlers are poised to clinch a 23rd state title today, Feb. 18, at the Lakeland Center. Nine team wrestlers have advanced, including two who are competing for their fifth state crowns.

 

Nine Brandon wrestlers have advanced in the Class 3A state wrestling tournament in Lakeland, where Russ Cozart’s Eagles are vying to win the school’s 23rd state title and 12th consecutive state crown.

With 92 points going into today’s final day of the two-day competition, Brandon is 23.50 points ahead of the second-place team, South Dade (Homestead).

In all, 86 teams are competing in the Feb. 17-18 tournament at the Lakeland Center, including, from Hillsborough County: Durant (13 points), East Bay (11 points), Plant City (9 points), Freedom (9 points), Bloomingdale (4 points) and Chamberlain (0 points).

Brandon wrestlers  Rossi Bruno and Clark Glass each are vying for a fifth individual state title, having first earned state titles in eighth-grade and seventh-grade, respectively.

Bruno (126 pounds) next faces Nosomy Pozo, having defeated Emmanual Singleton and Jose Felipe in the first two rounds. Glass (160 pounds) next faces Spencer Lacey, having defeated Michael Reyes and Daniel Sanchez in the first two rounds.

Last year, Brandon came home with seven state titlists, which tied a state record.

This year, Brandon has a chance to break that record, with nine wrestlers advancing to the second day of competition.

In addition to Bruno and Glass, Brandon wrestlers advancing are: Dylan Lucas (106 pounds), James Flint (113 pounds), Devan Berrian (120 pounds), Kevin Norstrem (132 pounds), Travis Berridge (152 pounds), Jacob Haydock (170 pounds) and Kyle Koziel (182 pounds).
