Seven Brandon Wrestlers Advance to Championship Round

The 2012 FHSAA Class 3A State Tournament is under way at the Lakeland Center. Brandon is poised to win its 23rd state title and 12th state championship in a row.

 

Russ Cozart’s Brandon High Eagles are wrestling for a 23rd state title, with seven wrestlers advancing to the championship round.

According to the latest team score and bracket updates Feb. 18, Brandon, with 176 points, is well on its way to victory, which would mark the school’s 12th state title in a row. In second place is South Dade (Homestead), with 126.50 points. In third place is St. Thomas Aquinas (Ft. Lauderdale), with 89.50 points.

Should all seven Brandon wrestlers achieve championship status it would be the second year in a row the team achieved that milestone, which ties a state record.

Two of the seven wrestlers will be competing for their fifth straight titles; both Rossi Bruno (126 pounds) and Clark Glass (160 pounds) won their first state titles as eighth- and seventh-graders, respectively.

Also vying for individual state titles are Dylan Lucas (106 pounds), James Flint (113 pounds), Kevin Norstrem (132 pounds), Jacob Haydock (170 pounds) and Kyle Koziel (182 pounds).

Brandon’s Travis Berridge, in the 152-pound weight class, is vying for a third-place trophy. Teammate Devan Berrian (120 pound) will be wrestling for a fifth-place trophy while Darien Kelly, of Durant, in the same weight class, remains in the championship bracket.
