Students Mourn Jenny Caballero

The 11-year-old Rodgers Middle School student drowned in a pond yesterday.

While the investigation into 11-year-old Jenny Caballero’s death at Rodgers Middle School yesterday continues, students are saying goodbye to their classmate in their own way – they’re making cards, and offering up teddy bears and flowers.

Caballero, who had Down syndrome, was reported missing from the Riverview campus yesterday afternoon. Following a five-hour search that included 75 Hillsborough County Sheriff’s deputies, K9 dogs, an all-terrain vehicle and a helicopter, she was found in a pond.

School officials said grief counselors were available for students and faculty today. According to Stephen Hegarty, spokesman for the district, some students brought in gifts for Caballero’s family.
