Will the Next YEA! Award Winner Be From Brandon?

Nominations are being accepted for Hillsborough County's Youth and Excellence and Achievement Awards for local middle and high school students.

Update: The deadline for entries has been extended through Feb. 17.

Here's your chance to recognize an outstanding young person who's making a difference in Brandon.

The Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners is accepting nominations for its Youth and Excellence and Achievement Awards (YEA! Awards), which honor local middle and high school students making positive contributions in their community. The inaugural awards were handed out last year and were the brainchild of District 6 Commissioner Kevin Beckner.

"He just wanted a way to recognize students who excel, who stand out and who have faced hardships and challenges," county spokesperson Carol Michel said.

Last year, students from Stewart, Randall and Mann middle schools and Freedom and King high schools were honored with YEA! Awards.

Students can be nominated in each of the following categories:

  • Leadership — demonstrating positive impact on others in an ongoing endeavor, such as sports, academics, the arts, etc.
  • Success Despite Difficult Odds — overcoming tremendous personal difficulty to attain success and a positive impact on others
  • Volunteer or Community Service — allocating their discretionary time to helping others or completing a project that has added to the betterment of our community

Nominations are being accepted through Feb. 3 and can be completed and submitted online. They can also be printed and submitted to the Hillsborough County Communications Department, 601 E. Kennedy Blvd., 1st Floor, Tampa, FL 33602, or by fax to 813-276-8695.

Nominations must be received no later than close of business on Friday, Feb. 3, and will be reviewed by the Commission on the Status of Women.

The YEA! Awards will be presented at a Board of County Commissioners meeting in March.
