Armwood High Football: Hawks Offensive Linemen Push for a Title

The Armwood Hawks offensive line could be one of, if not the best, in school history.

School history?

What about national history?

The Armwood Hawks are currently jockeying around the top five national rankings. Four of their five offensive linemen have Division I scholarship offers. All of them have some kind of offer. This year's Armwood Hawk team is on pace to break all kinds of records.

The all-senior offensive line rips apart opposing defenses, even without their star tailback, senior Matt Jones.

Let’s meet the five starting lineman and annexed tight end that help make the Armwood rushing attack, thus far, unstoppable.

Brandon Teeling:

Teeling anchors the left side of the line at tackle and currently has scholarship offers from: Washington, Temple, Western Michigan, South Alabama, and Wofford. He makes the move over from defensive tackle, last year with Armwood.

Defining moment for Teeling?

“The Bishop Gorman game,” he said. “Everything about it, being able to play on national TV.”

Best attribute as a lineman?

“I have a great work ethic,” he said. “Also, I’m great at celebrating touchdowns.”

Teeling will have plenty more opportunities to refine his touchdown-celebrating techniques.

What the best thing about being an Armwood Hawk?

“Winning…a lot,” he said.

Cody Waldrop:

Waldrop mans the left guard position, next to Teeling. This is Waldrop’s third year with Armwood and he has already committed to play his college ball at the University of South Carolina.

Defining moment for Waldrop?

“Bishop Gorman game; I got to do a trap block down the line and I laid out this linebacker that was in the backfield,” he said.

Best attribute as a lineman?

“I’m really good at pulling,” he said.

What’s the best thing about being an Armwood Hawk?

“Winning,” he said.

Cameron Dees:

Dees mans the center position on the Hawk front line. He is also a three-year starter for Armwood. Experience is tantamount to proficiency at that position and Dees feels like he’s got it. Dees is currently looking at offers from: Mississippi State, New Mexico, Ohio, Marshall, Ball State, Iowa State, Western Michigan, Delaware, and FIU.

Defining moment for Dees?

“When I transferred to Armwood,” he said.

Best attribute as a lineman?

“My superior line calls,” he said.

What’s the best thing about being an Armwood Hawk?

“The respect we get around the county,” he said.

Jack Lightsey:

Lightsey holds down right guard on the line and is in just his first year with Armwood. He transferred from Dr. Phillips High School in Orlando just last year. Lightsey is one of the more academically-minded kids on the team, boasting an 1150 SAT score, he recently received a scholarship offer from Albany.

Defining moment for Lightsey?

“The spring game against Plant City; it was my first game as an Armwood Hawk,” he said.

Best attribute as a lineman?

“My form,” he said. His fellow linemen insisted that his best attribute was his ankle braces or perhaps the visor on his helmet. They are obviously, a close-knit group. Indeed, it’s difficult to get answers out of one of them without the other chiming in friendly jabs. Except for Teeling; he says nothing unless spoken to. He’s the quiet one.

Best thing about being an Armwood Hawk?

“I like being the most dominant in Hillsborough County,” he said.

Kevin McCoy:

McCoy rounds out the right side of the line at tackle. His fellow linemen have tagged him with the nickname, “Heff-Load” but McCoy is both big and fit. It’s just more friendly ribbing from this tight and sometimes loquacious group, but not Teeling, remember he’s the quiet one. McCoy is in his second year with the Hawks and currently has offers from: Auburn, UCF, USF, Vanderbilt, and North Texas.

Defining moment for McCoy?

“Last year, homecoming game versus East Lake: I spiked the ball after a Josh Grady touchdown and it started raining flags,” he said.

Best attribute as a lineman?

“Athletic feet,” he said.

Best thing about being an Armwood Hawk?

“The respect we get,” he said.

K.J. Miles:

The only junior on the offensive front, lines up at tight end but is also a big part of the running game. Miles transferred from last year and has not looked back. Miles does not yet have any offers but he still has another year to go and will very likely attract some suitors with his performance this season.

Defining moment for Miles?

“Scoring my first touchdown for Armwood in the spring game,” he said.

Best attribute as a tight end?

“I bring some bulk to the wide receivers’ corps,” he said.

Best thing about being an Armwood Hawk?

“I’m able to enjoy what I love, which is to play the game of football,” he said.

Look for this group to make some major waves this season as they continue to blow apart teams in their conquest for a state title...and who knows; maybe a national title.

Update: They're one step closer with the team's 20-0 win against defending Class 3A state champion Jefferson High, on Sept. 30.
