Brandon Boys & Girls Club to Get Boost from Sporting Clay Tournament

The event is scheduled for Saturday, March 31 at FishHawk Sporting Clays in Lithia.

The Bill Carey Unit of the Boys & Girls Club in Brandon is literally shooting for a successful fundraiser.

The 9-year-old club, serving 160 children, at 212 N. Knights Ave., Brandon, is hoping to raise funds for operations during the second scheduled for Saturday, March 31, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at FishHawk Sporting Clays, 13505 Hobson Simmons Rd. in Lithia.

According to Chris McGuire, a member of the club’s board of directors who is helping to organize the event, government funding cuts are taking its toll on the club, which provides after-school recreation, supervision and homework help for Brandon area children.

McGuire said the event will raise funds to supplement the club's operational costs.

"Shooting sporting clays is a popular pastime, and the nice thing about it is you don’t have to have a lot of experience. Even first-time shooters can participate," said McGuire.

McGuire said they’re hoping to attract about 150 shooters for the Bill Carey Sporting Clay Tournament.

The event will include a barbecue lunch catered by of Brandon.

In addition, there will be raffles for a shotgun, sports memorabilia and other gift items. Tickets are $10 each or five for $40.

The cost to participate is $400 for a four-man team or $125 for an individual, said McGuire. Sponsorships include Event Sponsor ($5,000), Wild Turkey Sponsor ($2,500), Pheasant Sponsor ($1,500) and Quail Sponsor ($1,000.)

Registration begins at 8 a.m. There will be a safety briefing at 9 a.m. and the shoot starts at 9:30 a.m. The shoot will end at 11:30 a.m. followed by lunch and the raffle drawing."

“Everything’s included — lunch, T-shirts, ammunition, clays and a goody bag,” McGuire said. Shooters can bring their own guns or they can use one of FishHawk Sporting Clays’ guns.

“It’s a lot of fun,” he said. “Children as young as 12 or 14 years old can participate.”
