Brandon Leagurettes Makes Its Pitch For Girl Softball Players

Karin Tejada, a coach for the Brandon Leagurettes, gives some pretty compelling reasons for enrolling girls into the long-standing nonprofit girls softball league that plays in the Brandon park at the corner of Kingsway and Sadie roads.

"We would like to get the word out on our program and we're hoping you and the Patch could help us," Tejada wrote in an email message sent this week.

Happy to do so. Below is Tejada's review of the program, including details for how to sign up and insight into why Brandon Leagurettes has been a Brandon tradition for more than 50 years.

Brandon Leaguerettes: Don't You Wish You Played Like A Girl?

"Whether you want to play fast-pitch or slow-pitch softball, we are the league for you. Brandon Leaguerettes is a non-profit sports league for girls softball. Our league has been catering to girls, ages 5 through 18, for more than 50 years.  Girls come from near and far to join our league.  We have players who live in Brandon, Plant City, Riverview, Thonotosassa, Tampa, Valrico and everywhere in between.

"Girls play for our league continuously for years because of the fun they have and the friends they make. The girls in our league make friends that last beyond a season of playing. Former players continue to stay with us and give back by helping to coach teams when they no longer are young enough to play on a team.

"Former players, who now have young ladies of their own, entrust their little ones to us. We instill the same values in them that we taught their mom over the years: commitment, honesty, integrity, good self esteem and good sportsmanship.   We expect the same from our ‘adults’ as we do our youth; honesty, integrity, and good sportsmanship.

"We have coaches who have been with the league for more than 15 years.  We appreciate the time and assistance the “old-timers” give as we encourage family and friends to get involved and coach as well.

"School teams have a limited number of players. Travel ball is expensive and geared toward experienced players. Brandon Leaguerettes is affordable as well as accepting of [all] player abilities.

"Being a recreation league, we have our own set of rules. Our players always get to field and bat. There are no bench-warmers here.  We are here for all of the girls and there is no such thing as a bad player. With the assistance and encouragement from our coaches and players, you will improve your game while learning lifelong lessons and making lifelong friendships.

"Are you homeschooled? Are you between seasons? Are you looking for a fun sport to get involved with? Our regular season is right around the corner. We will have sign-ups throughout the month of October on Thursdays (6 to 8 p.m.) and Saturdays (10 a.m. to noon). Come and see why Brandon Leaguerettes costs less but provides so much more than any other league.  For more information call or text Jessica at 813-454-7818. Or, email at: brandonleauguerettes@gmail.com. Visit Brandon Leagurettes online.

"For a look at what we do, stop by the fields (through the month of October) in the evenings, Monday through Friday, and Saturday mornings. We are at the corner of Kingsway and Sadie, across the street from Yates Elementary School. The address is  Brandon Park, 502 East Sadie Rd, Brandon, FL 33510."
