‘Seussical the Musical’ a Summer Camp Show at First Baptist Brandon MAC

On stage June 22 at the First Baptist Brandon Ministries and Activities Center (MAC) is the School of Fine Arts summer camp, youth production of "Seussical the Musical," based on the books by Dr. Seuss.

Bailee Lawrence and Keeley Bynum have their reasons for appearing in the School of Fine Arts (SOFA) production of “Seussical the Musical” at the in Brandon.

“I like it because I get to spend time with my friends and I get to be in a show and do what I love to do most,” said Lawrence, 9, about her roles as a Fish and as a Wickersham.

Her favorite things to do, she said, are “singing and riding horses."

As for Bynum, 11, she said her draw to the summer production was “having something to do and being around friends because I don’t get to see them a lot because I’m home-schooled."

“I love to act and sing,” she added. “I like to be someone that I’m not just to see what it feels like."

“Seussical the Musical” is on stage June 22 at 6:30 p.m.

The MAC is at 216 N. Parsons Ave., south of Brandon Boulevard, and on the campus grounds of the First Baptist Church of Brandon.

The show’s director is Debbie Shenning, whose husband, David, is the minister of music for the First Baptist Church of Brandon, which in 2015 celebrates its 100th anniversary. She is assisted by Becky Lawrence, a church member and the music teacher at the Brandon Academy.

Staging the production “was just an idea, to see who wants to do it, and our kids are having fun with it,” Lawrence said. “This is the first summer camp we’ve done.”

“Seussical the Musical" was chosen because of readily available sets and props from another school production and because of the show’s draw.

“I think everybody has a connection with Dr. Seuss stories and the show hit upon a lot of them,” Lawrence said. “It’s all made-up words and the songs are very catchy."
