At the July meeting of the Community Roundtable, honorary mayor of Brandon hopeful B. Lee Elam presented to GFWC Brandon Service League representatives a check for $5,000 to boost the club's general scholarship fund.

Elam raised the money in his charity race for the honorary mayor position, which this year went to Gay Lynn Love. Each year the race is won by the "candidate" who raises the most money for their selected charities.

Elam presented the check to Brandon Service League treasurer Zana Turner and to Sandy Pullinger, a past president of the league.

League officials recently established the general scholarship fund to run in conjunction with the General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) Florida President’s Project "Schools and Scholarships," a statewide scholarship opportunity for a graduating female senior or woman returning to college to further her education.

The Brandon Service League will pledge a portion of Elam's donation to the state president’s project as well as award additional local scholarships with similar eligibility requirements.

These new scholarships will be in addition to the club’s Reynolds Bryan Arts Scholarship, which is awarded yearly to a graduating senior seeking a college degree in some aspect of the arts. The scholarship is named in honor of the husband of Claire Bryan, a long-time member and past club president.

The Brandon Service League is a proud member of the GFWC and has served the Brandon community for more than 50 years. The club is currently accepting new members. Contact the club's membership chairperson at bslmembership@gmail.com for more information.
