GET OUT: Weekend Events Preview May 24-26

With a variety of entertainment venues and restaurants in the area, there's no reason to spend the weekend at home. Here's a list of fun things to do in the Brandon area.

Bay Life Car and Craft Show

Bay Life Church, 1017 Kingsway Rd., Brandon, will host its eighth annual car and craft show Saturday, May 25 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This free event opens with color guard from the Newsome High School JROTC, then the National Anthem sung live. There will be live music throughout the event and those attending will see more than 300 muscle, sports, foreign, drag-racing and classic cars. There also will be 35 craft vendors, activities for the kids, food and drinks. All proceeds go to Bay Life youth missions. 

Memorial Day Remembrance

The fifth annual Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony will take place Saturday, May 25 at 11 a.m. at Hillsboro Memorial Funeral Home, 2323 W. Brandon Blvd., Brandon. Attendees are encouraged to bring donations of nonperishable food, toiletries and gently used men's clothing for the Liberty Manor Veterans Home. Lunch will be served following the ceremony.

Memorial Day Ceremony

The Veterans Council of Hillsborough County Inc. will hold a Memorial Day Ceremony at the Veterans Memorial Park and Rear Admiral LeRoy Collins Jr. Museum, 3602 U.S. 301, Tampa, Sunday, May 26 at 11 a.m.

The ceremony will feature patriotic songs from Charles Haugabrooks; remarks from Frank Strom, managing director of Hillsborough County’s Division of Veterans Affairs; Walt Raysick, president of the Veterans Council of Hillsborough County; and a keynote speaker from U.S. CENTCOM on MacDill Air Force Base.

Following the speeches, the Scottish American Military Society will conduct the POW/MIA Missing Man Remembrance Celebration, and the area’s Gold Star Wives, Mothers and Families will present a wreath to honor Hillsborough County’s fallen warriors. The Riverview detachment of the Marine Corp League will conclude the ceremony with a rifle salute and playing of taps. Immediately after the ceremony, there will be a brief groundbreaking at the base of the Battle Cross of the Iraqi Freedom War Memorial. 

A Grape Education

Wine specialist Marc Wagner of Rolling Pin Kitchen Emporium, 2080 Badlands Dr., Brandon, will present a guided wine tasting with three wines and two cheeses Saturday, May 25 from 3 to 4 p.m. 

'Brighton Beach Memoirs' on Stage

The Valrico Village Players will present "Brighton Beach Memoirs" Friday, May 24 and Saturday, May 25 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, May 26 at 3 p.m. at the James McCabe Theater, 506 5th St., Valrico. Neil Simon's "Brighton Beach Memoirs" is a comedy reflecting Simon's teenage years growing up in a Jewish family in Brighton Beach. Tickets are $14 and $12.

Scrapbookers and Stampers Unite

Scrapbook and Stamping lovers are invited to a get-together Friday, May 24 at 6:30 p.m. at Holy Innocents' Episcopal Church, 604 N. Valrico Rd., Valrico. Bring your own supplies. A Sizzix Big Shot die-cutting machine with various dies and embossing folders will be available. The $5 attendance fee goes to the church's mission team.

Trivia Night

Uncle Mike's Smokehouse Grill, 9847 E. Adamo Dr., Tampa, hosts a Trivia Night each Sunday at 6 p.m.
