As our armed forces come home from the Middle East, the local Veterans Affairs benefits office is being stretched.
Our veterans are now facing a new enemy at home – long wait times for disability claims. The waiting times started increasing in 2010 when U.S. troops were withdrawn from Iraq, causing a dramatic uptick in first-time filers, according to the Center for Investigative Reporting. The data found that in most regional VA offices, not only did waiting times increase, but they vary dramatically by location: about a year and five months in Baltimore, Maryland compared to four months in Fargo, North Dakota. The backlog of veterans at the St. Petersburg area office waiting on a disability claim to be reveiwed has increased from no …
Lyle Flagg's death has caused a flood of memories among citizens of the Greater Brandon area, who remember a man who served as chairman of two chambers of commerce and principal of five schools, including Brandon and Armwood.

That was Lyle Flagg, a World War II veteran, who after his 85 years of life came to an end this week is being remembered as the consummate educator who helped shape a town. "When I think of the giants in our community, Lyle Flagg was an icon," said Earl Lennard, who served as both Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections and Hillsborough County superintendent of schools. "We lost another one of our tall timber." Flagg was principal of five Hillsborough County public schools, including East Bay High School …

Standing at the corner near her home at 242 Faithway Drive in Seffner, Lisa Jaudon watched as the home two doors away fell victim to the heavy equipment tearing it apart into shreds, the second home on the street to be torn down in the aftermath of the catastrophic sinkhole that claimed the life of Jeffrey Bush. Her house would be next, standing to the east of what was once the Wicker home at 240 Faithway Drive, the site of the Feb. 28 sinkhole that had captured worldwide attention. As she watched the Allen home, at 238 Faithway Drive, meet its fate, Jaudon said it had been nine weeks since she last stepped foot in the home in which she and her husband, Lonny, raised three kids, before his death almost seven years ago, at age 51. "Even …
