Named for a former Hillsborough County School District member, Hugo Schmidt Elementary School opened in 2003 at…More Williams and Windhorst Roads in Brandon.
The school's mission, to be "anchored in academic excellence and integrity," plays off the school's nautical theme. The school's emblem is the anchor. Schmidt attended Hillsborough public schools, owned a building supply business and retired from the U.S. Navy. The school that bears his name is home to the "Sailors" and its colors are red, white and blue.
Schmidt is a uniform school. Students can wear khaki or blue (no denim) pants, long shorts, skorts or jumpers. As for tops, students can wear red, white or blue polo shirts, blouses, sweatshirts or sweaters. Tops must have collars and sleeves and should be plain (no pictures or logos).
The school for the 2009-10 school year received an "A" grade from the state. The grade is based on points that are determined by assessing "adequate progress" among students testing in the bottom 25 percent of test-takers in reading and mathematics. Schools must also test at least 95 percent of students eligible overall.
