Brandon Woman Involved in Fatal Bearss Avenue Crash

Hillsborough County Sheriff’s deputies say the accident happened near Lake Emerald Boulevard around 7 p.m. May 24.

A 25-year-old Tampa man is dead following a Friday evening crash on Bearss Avenue near Lake Emerald Boulevard in the Lake Magdalene area. Geoffrey B. Dawson was riding a motorcycle west on Bearss “at a high rate of speed and in a careless manner,” wrote Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Debbie Carter in an email to media. Dawson is said to have passed between cars traveling side by side twice before the accident occurred. As Dawson continued westbound, a set of vehicles approached a green light at Lake Emerald Boulevard. A 2012 Ford Focus driven by Catherine Nicholas, 27, of Brandon made a left turn from eastbound Bearss. Deputies say she did not see Dawson as she turned. “While turning, the motorcyclist passed between the …

Memorial Day Patrols Heightened To Nab Drunken Drivers

It's never a safe bet to drink and drive. The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office has extra money to patrol streets in the Greater Brandon area and beyond for the 2013 Memorial Day weekend.

Memorial Day patrols aimed at ridding the streets of drunken drivers have been ramped up this year thanks to extra money the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office has received through a grant from the Florida Department of Transportation. That means two things: lots of cruisers on the street and yet another reminder that drinking and driving not only don't mix but also can get you into a heap of costly trouble. Just ask the 21 people arrested on DUI charges countywide during last year's Memorial Day weekend. Don't be a statistic this year. “The Sheriff's Operation 3D DUI Squad will search for impaired drivers operating on county roadways and near county parks known for active outdoor activities, including county parks with boat ramps,” …
