Fine Art Winners at the 2012 Hillsorough County Fair

Budding artists from Hillsborough County schools along with adult artists in the amateur and professional divisions displayed their work at the 2012 Hillsborough County Fair. Ribbons were awarded to the winning entries.

Ribbons notified the winning work on display at the Fine Art Show at the 2012 Hillsborough County Fair, judged mainly (75 percent) by "the artist's use of technique and the intended message," according to the judge's statement. The judge notes that the Best in Show painting, "Scarlet Macaw," by Nancy Kirkpatrick, in the Professional Division: . . . displays the artist's overall knowledge of how to enhance the subject through value, color and paint application. The predominant use of soft focus and muted colors supports the [artist's] center of interest and the scarlet macaw's pose creates a strong composition. First place in Amateur Oils went to "Arakara Girl," by Richard Wagoner, "also a noteworthy painting," according to the judge's …

Recycled Yard Art Turns Junk Into Masterpieces (Photos)

On display at the 2012 Hillsborough County Fair in Greater Brandon were pieces of recycled art created by local artists for a contest sponsored by the Hillsborough County Extension Service in Seffner.

Call it "trash art" if you must, but don't call it garbage. The Recycled Yard Art Contest on display at the 2012 Hillsborough County Fair showed just how creative people can get with everyday items laying about, including unwanted, weathered, discarded, rusted, beat-up items that are way past their prime — or not. Rust, condition and age matter not to the creators of the pieces of art that were on display at the fair, where master gardeners Bob and Verna Dickey helped man the show presented in conjunction with the Hillsborough County Extension Service in Seffner. "You don't have to throw your stuff away," Verna Dickey said."Every year the [Recycled Yard Art Contest] shows what you can do with [old and unused items]." She practices what …

The youth swine sale was held Oct. 20 at the Hillsborough County Fair in the Greater Brandon community of Dover, drawing students from schools throughout the Tampa Bay area. The sights were as to be expected, fat pigs, determined students, eager bidders, a spirited auctioneer and T-shirts driving home the point that for the most die-hard of fair attendees, it's a night for speaking out for agriculture. "Boar Hunting," read one T-Shirt. "Someone has to bring home the bacon." Toward that end, Grace Pipkins and Kristina Guciardo, seniors from Sickles High School, took to the task of showing their pigs, named "Debbie" and "Pancakes," respectively. Drawing $2.25 a pound, Debbie, at 222 pounds, sold for pennies shy of $500. Pancakes, weighing in…
