State Rep. Rich Glorioso is continuing his bid to replace Earl Lennard, who is not seeking reelection as Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections. Glorioso had been considering a run for the Senate seat Ronda Storms is vacating.
State. Rep Rich Glorioso, R-Plant City, has decided to stay put with his intentions to run for the Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections. Glorioso had announced yesterday that he was considering a run instead for the state Senate seat being vacated by Ronda Storms, R-Valrico, who over the Memorial Day weekend announced her intention to run for Hillsborough County Property Appraiser. That decision prompted State Rep. Rachel Burgin, R-Riverview, to change her mind as well. Instead of running for re-election to her House seat, Burgin over the Memorial Day weekend announced her plans to run for the District 24 seat that Storms is vacating. District 24 includes Brandon, Sun City Center, Riverview, Valrico, Mango, Seffner, Plant City, …
State Rep. Rich Glorioso said he would decide today, May 31, whether he would run for the Senate seat being vacated by Ronda Storms. That would pit him against State Rep. Rachel Burgin and former Senate President Tom Lee for the District 24 seat.
State Rep. Rich Glorioso said May 30 he would be "on his knees a lot tonight" to determine through prayer, and then in consultation with his wife and family, whether he, too, should join the race for the state Senate seat being vacated by Ronda Storms. Glorioso made this announcement at the Legislative Update Luncheon presented by the Greater Brandon Chamber of Commerce at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Brandon on May 30. If Glorioso were to run for the Senate, he would be removing his name from the list of candidates to succeed Earl Lennard as Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections. Lennard, the former superintendent of schools, has decided not to seek another term. Glorioso's time in the House has run its course due to term limits. …

Art Wood, chair of the Hillsborough County Republican Party, headquartered in Brandon, issues a strong reaction to President Obama's televised endorsement of same-sex marriages, calling it "a strategic endorsement."
Hillsborough Republicans are calling President Obama's comments May 9 concerning legalizing same-sex marriage a ploy to garner votes this fall. In a television interview May 9, Obama publicly endorsed making same-sex marriage legal. The interview with ABC's Robin Roberts was broadcast yesterday afternoon. “I’ve just concluded that for me, personally, it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married,” Obama said to Roberts. Obama's remarks prompted an online reaction from the Hillsborough County Republican Party. “We understand that everything Mr. Obama is doing at this point, including his speeches, appearances and endorsements, is a part of a calculated and timed strategy to …

The May 2 grand opening for Hillsborough County's second Obama for America office drew volunteers eager to join neighborhood teams for Brandon and Valrico, Plant City, Riverview and SouthShore communities.
The Obama for America office, for securing and serving Southeastern Hillsborough County volunteers, opened at Winthrop in Riverview on May 2, with meeting rooms for residents from Brandon and Valrico, Plant City, Riverview and SouthShore. “I am a staunch Democrat and I’ve always been one and I love our president, who’s doing wonders for America right now,” said volunteer Christine Prescod, who was at the office, at 11215 Bloomingale Ave., to sign in visitors and volunteers. “He is a very intelligent president and he takes care of his people, the American citizens.” Inside, OFA workers rallied visitors to the cause, heralding the Riverview office as the 25th office in Florida — and the second in Hillsborough County — with 182 days left …
State Sen. Ronda Storms speaks at the April 30 Alafia Republican Club meeting, held to recruit volunteers for the Republican National Convention in Tampa, phone banks, precinct walks, registration drives and sign-waving activities.
While area Democrats were busy preparing to open a President Obama re-election office in Riverview on May 2, members of the Alafia Republican Club met to make plans of their own to defeat the sitting president this fall. There was standing room only at the club's April 30 meeting, the largest turnout to date, said club President Jeff Lukens. "It's a big year, and this is the largest crowd we've ever had, but we hope to outgrow this room," he said. Deborah Cox-Roush, a club member as well as a member of the Republican National Committee, said it was rewarding to see so many Republicans in attendance. Cox-Roush is director of volunteers for the secured perimeter of the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Aug. 27-30. She invited club …

Attorney Clif Curry is a local co-chair for Mitt Romney's bid to secure the Republican presidential nomination.
Attorney and Brandon High graduate Clif Curry, a former president of the Greater Brandon Chamber of Commerce and a recipient of the group’s Key Citizen Award, said he was asked to be one of the local co-chairs for Mitt Romney’s campaign in Hillsborough County just a few weeks ago. “I had not endorsed any candidate until then because I wanted to watch and see how things played out,” Curry said. “It became very apparent to me that the candidate who had the ability to beat the president is Mr. Romney and that’s why I decided to support him and agreed to be one of his co-chairmen.” Curry said he isn’t surprised that the campaign turned negative in its waning hours. “(Newt) Gingrich has thrown everything that he can think of, every piece of …
The Greater Brandon Republican Club meets at O'Brien's Irish Pub on Lumsden Road for a 2012 GOP Presidential Preference Primary watch party.
Early came the results and quickly followed the collective support for a candidate not everyone in the Greater Brandon Republican Club had endorsed. But now, with Gov. Mitt Romney the chosen son of a Florida Republican electorate, some of the club members, meeting for a Presidential Preference Primary watch party at O’Brien’s Irish Pub in Brandon, are ready to switch their allegiances — if necessary. “I voted for Newt Gingrich but I can support Mitt Romney,” said Tony Jackson, sergeant at arms for the Republican club, speaking for many in the event room at O’Brien’s. Even better, he said, would be a Romney-Gingrich ticket. “I think both men would capture all of the points, all of the three legs of the stool, of the Republican Party,” …

Mitt Romney earns a convincing victory over Newt Gingrich and other Republican nominees in Florida's Presidential Preference Primary.
Mitt Romney won the Florida Presidential Preference Primary on Tuesday, earning the state's 50 delegates and distancing himself from Newt Gingrich as the Republican frontrunner for 2012. The Associated Press projected Romney's commanding victory shortly after 8 p.m. when the final polls closed in Florida's Panhandle. The former Massachusetts governor had taken 46 percent of the vote to 31 percent for Gingrich after returns from 95 percent of the polls were in. Rick Santorum had 13 percent, and Ron Paul 7 percent. "Florida, you're the best," a victorious Romney told a crowd gathered at his primary night celebration at the downtown Tampa Convention Center. Attorney and Brandon High graduate Clif Curry, a former president of the Greater …
A photo of a children's park in Brandon accompanied a New York Times article about the plight of Florida, as illustrated along the Interstate 4 corridor, published two days before the state's GOP Presidential Preference Primary.
Gail Gottlieb isn’t anywhere near the polls today in Brandon, which doesn’t matter from a civic involvement standpoint, since Gottlieb is a registered Democrat. That doesn’t mean, though, that the issues that weigh heavily on the minds of Republican voters in Florida, as they select their GOP presidential candidate, don’t bode ill for her as well. That point was driven home to her on a subway ride in New York City, where Gottlieb, a Local Voices blogger for Brandon Patch, said she opened up a print copy of The New York Times and read the headline: “Years of Despair Add to Uncertainty in Florida Race.” What captured Gottlieb's attention, even before reading the Jan. 29 article, was one of the 14 photographs that accompanied the article, …
