What's Hillsborough Saying?

Al Higginbotham: Have Recent Votes Hurt His Chances?

The County Commissioner from East Hillsborough is running for a countywide seat in 2014, but some are saying his stand on two recent controversial issues will hurt him in the long run. We’d like to get your thoughts!

Hillsborough County Commissioner Al Higginbotham is in for a fight in 2014 – one that some say he’s going to have an increasingly difficult time winning. The District 4 commissioner from East Hillsborough County is running for a countywide seat on the board. While his strong support base of Eastern Hillsborough Republicans has carried him through in the past, skeptics say Higginbotham is going to have a hard time overcoming his own voting record when residents countywide turn out to the polls in 2014. 2 Possible Sticking Points The Tampa Tribune calls into question Higginbotham’s ability to overcome two recent decisions it says have cast the commissioner in a less-than-positive light with those who don’t share his conservative views. They …

Just for the record (in answer to George Newman's comment), I don't have it in for Commissioner Higginbotham. However, I found him to be less than truthful on a whole host of issues which I cited examples of in an earlier comment. The items I cited are a matter of record. I realize that Higginbotham supporters may not want to acknowledge these inadequacies and may want to turn a blind eye to them…   more ›

District 4 Sends Al Higginbotham Back to County Commission

Higginbotham attributed his win to grassroots campaigning and hard-working volunteers.

Only an hour and 45 minutes after the polls closed, District 4 Hillsborough County Commission candidate Mark Nash, D-Lithia, knew he'd lost the race. At a gathering with supporters at the Hilton Garden Inn in Riverview, Nash intently watched the computer as the Supervisor of Elections Office released the precinct totals. Carrying just 38 percent of the vote, Nash conceded to incumbent County Commissioner Al Higginbotham, R-Plant City. "I congratulate Al," said Nash. "It's obvious I don't have the votes." However, Nash stopped short of calling his bid for office a failure. "A lot of good things came out of it. I reconnected with a lot of friends and even relatives," said Nash. Among those supporting Nash was a cousin he didn't know he had …

Mr Higginbotham and his wife were such nice people. I am a performer with Cirque Italia and we come across a lot of different people from all over the world. And this man was extremely pleasant to speak to and humble. We were honored to be a part of his party the other night and grateful he came to see our show here in Tampa. I wish him all the best of luck in his position and life. -Nicolette …   more ›

Local Democrats Eye Republican Opponents

Democrats running for office, including Gail Gottlieb, Mark Nash, Bruce Barnett and Elizabeth Belcher, face a more-focused race now that their Republican opponents have been decided with votes cast at the 2012 Primary Election.

While much of the media’s attention over the past month was on the Republican candidates in a closed-primary state, local Democrats have been quietly organizing their own campaigns for the fall, free of the distractions of party primaries. Republicans like Tom Lee and Jake Raburn had to fight for the right to represent the GOP in sometimes contentious and expensive primaries. Those races grabbed the bulk of headlines in newspapers and on TV. Local Democrats have kept their powder dry, running mostly unopposed in primaries, making few headlines but also not tapping campaign coffers they will need in the fall. Now that the dust has settled after the 2012 Primary Election on Aug. 14, naming for each party its local standard-bearer, the race …

Photos: Restoration Ongoing at Frost, Buoyed by Mosaic, Community Support

Photos of the aftermath of a July 28 fire at Frost Elementary School, shown alongside photos snapped at the school's Aug. 16 open house greeting, give testament to the will of a community to make right the lives of teachers and students at Frost.

Two Hillsborough County commissioners and representatives of the Mosaic company were in attendance Aug. 16 at the open house for parents and students at Frost Elementary School, where a fire July 28 destroyed the kindergarten classrooms of teachers Holly Cover and Jamy Daily-Herman. "At first it was devastating and now it's just been great all the support from everybody," said teacher Holly Cover, in a full report on the gathering posted at Brandon Patch (Fire-Damaged Frost Elementary Bounces Back With Community Support ). "We couldn't rebuild without it." That support includes a $5,000 check from the Mosaic company and school supplies donated by employees at the Riverview plant and the FishHawk offices. Nash Seeks To Unseat Higginbotham in County Commission Race

Mark Nash, a 1979 graduate of Brandon High, seeks to unseat Al Higginbotham, a Plant City resident, in the Hillsborough County Commssion race for District 4. Newly drawn boundaries for District 4 split Brandon in two along State Road 60.

The race for Eastern Hillsborough’s District 4 county commission seat pits Brandon High School graduate Mark Nash, a Democrat, against incumbent Plant City resident Al Higginbotham, a Republican. Nash this year is looking to do for himself what he has already done for others  in Eastern Hillsborough County: unseat an incumbent. Higginbotham is banking on winning another term to a seat he won easily in 2006 because, as he put it, “I’ve paid attention to detail, acted with integrity, kept my word and responded to citizen’s concerns.” Nash believes his “vision for the future of this community with better job opportunities, expanded transportation options and smarter growth management decisions” will win him a majority at the polls. …

Higgenbotham has done NOTHING significant for Brandon since first elected after Ronda Storms left. And just try contacting his office staff. Hillsborough County Commissioner Al Higginbotham joins Michael Whitt, of AMVETS Post 44 in Brandon, and Walt Raysic, president of the Veterans Council of Hillsborough County, at the Memorial Day Service of Remembrance on May 28.

Hillsborough County Commissioner Al Higginbotham is set to give the keynote speech at the Serenity Meadows Memorial Day Service of Remembrance on May 28. Paying tribute to the valor of soldiers and the supreme sacrifice is a duty Higginbotham said he holds dear and true to his heart. At the Oct. 15 burial service for Army 1st Lt. Ivan Lechowich, Higginbotham said he has not missed a soldier's funeral since taking office in 2006. "This is my duty," he said, standing among the mourners. "Young men and women are willing to go out and sacrifice their lives to allow us as public and private citizens to do what we do, it's the least I can do to come out and pay my respects to them and their families." Also scheduled to speak May 28 at the …

Time Warner Narrows Search to County, Could Mean Some 500 Jobs Locally

After considering 59 locations, Time Warner Business Services has narrowed its search of existing space to buildings in Tampa, Temple Terrace and unincorporated Hillsborough County.

The Greater Brandon area could be in the running for a shared-services center expected to bring about 500 jobs to Hillsborough County. Governor Rick Scott announced in Tallahassee on Sept. 20 that Time Warner Business Services is looking to bring those jobs to the community over the next several years. After considering 59 locations, including Atlanta and Charlotte, the company has narrowed its search of existing space to buildings in Tampa, Temple Terrace and unincorporated Hillsborough County. State law mandates the sites being considered cannot be made public until the leases are signed. The St. Petersburg Times has an in-depth report on the issue, including timing, incentives, commitments, projected payroll (at least $25 million) and …

Key Commissioners Appear Ready To Back County’s After-School Program

County Commissioner Mark Sharpe likely to join Sandra Murman and Kevin Beckner, who also appear ready to support a plan to keep after-school care at Hillsborough recreation centers.

Commissioners are likely to vote tomorrow, Aug. 24, to maintain the county’s after-school program at 25-30 recreation centers. The program’s future was in doubt after a 4-3 vote last month to eliminate after-school care and cut staff at the vast majority of the county’s recreation centers. Voting to eliminate the program were commissioners Mark Sharpe, Sandra Murman, Al Higginbotham and Kevin Beckner. All four cited the county’s severe budget woes as the reason for their vote but said there are viable alternatives for after-school care. Commissioners Ken Hagan, Les Miller and Victor Crist voted against the measure. Supporters of the county’s after-school program took heart from the narrow margin of that 4-3 vote, knowing they need sway …
