Well-Known Brandon Educator Lyle Flagg Dead at 85

Lyle Flagg served as principal of Brandon, Armwood and East Bay high schools.

Family, friends and former students are mourning the death of longtime Brandon educator Lyle Flagg, who died Tuesday, May 21 at the age of 85. Born Jan. 13, 1928 to Forrest and Louise Flagg in Fayette, Maine, Flagg served in the Navy during World War II and received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Maine. In 1954, he moved his family to Brandon where he served 40 years with the Hillsborough County School System and was a longtime member of Nativity Catholic Church. During his tenure as an educator, Flagg was principal of Pinecrest High School, Dowdell Junior High School, Brandon High School from 1968-74, East Bay High School, Armwood High School from 1984-90, and was the director of secondary education for the …

On View at the 2013 Seffner Relay For Life

The American Cancer Society's Relay For Life at Armwood High School wraps up today, April 20, after a Friday night lineup of events, booths, survivors and volunteers.

  The 2013 Seffner Relay For Life drew a determined crowd to Armwood High School for the overnight April 19-20 fundraiser. Seffner, Plant City Relays For Life Set To Go Tonight (April 19)

The overnight 2013 Seffner Relay For Life fundraiser at Armwood High School is set to start 6 p.m. tonight, April 19. So, too, the Relay For Life at Plant City High School.

The American Cancer Society's 2013 Relay For Life season in Eastern Hillsborough County wraps up tonight, April 19, at both Armwood and Plant City high schools. The 2013 Seffner Relay For Life is set to kick off 6 p.m. with at least 20 teams and about 280 registered participants. The 2013 Plant City Relay For Life is set to kick off 6 p.m. with 67 teams 1,018 participants. These are the final two Relays for Eastern Hillsborough County, following fundraisers earlier this month and last at Riverview, Newsome, Brandon and Bloomingdale high schools. According to Sara Vinzant, community representative for the Southeast Hillsborough Unit of the American Cancer Society, the three Relays at Riverview, Newsome and Bloomingdale alone have raised …

Eastern Hillsborough Relays Start Strong, Build Momentum

The American Cancer Society's 2013 Relay For Life season in Eastern Hillsborough County started strong with events at Riverview and Newsome high schools. Events are coming at Armwood, Bloomingdale, Brandon and Plant City high schools.

  Successful events at Newsome and Riverview high schools marked the opening round of the American Cancer Society's 2013 Relay For Life season in Eastern Hillsborough County, with close to $190,000 raised at these two Relays alone, according to the latest online account. Additional Relays for Eastern Hillsborough County are scheduled in the weeks ahead for Armwood, Bloomingdale, Brandon and Plant City high schools. Collectively, as of 5 a.m. March 23, the six sites in Eastern Hillsborough County had reported 249 teams, 3,634 participants and $274,045.14 raised. (See chart below.) From Top of the Class at Armwood High to Center of the Immigration Debate

Jose Godinez-Samperio, 26, was invited to President Barack Obama's State of the Union address by U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor, D-Tampa.

  At President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address Feb. 12, at the House of Representatives in Washington, D.C., an Armwood High School graduate, first in his class, was to be in attendance as testament to the “complicated and unresolved debate over immigration,” according to a report posted by the Tampa Bay Times. The post concerns Jose Godinez-Samperio, who, as noted in the Tampa Bay Times report, was first in his class at Armwood High in Seffner, earned the rank of Eagle Scout, graduated from Florida State University’s law school, but “cannot be admitted to the Florida Bar because he’s not a U.S. citizen.” Godinez-Samperio reportedly was born in Mexico, came to America with his parents at age 9 and was invited to the State of the …

Armwood Football: Hawks Face Gainesville for Region Title Tonight

The Armwood Hawks travel to Gainesville tonight, Nov. 30, for the FHSAA Class 6A-Region 2 final. Arwmood advanced after last week's 9-7 revenge defeat of the Hillsborough High Terriers, who beat the Hawks 3-0 earlier in the season.

  The Armwood Hawks travel to Gainesville today, Nov. 30, with hopes to bring home the Class 6A-Region 2 title. Armwood advances to the third round of 2012 Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) post-season play after beating Hillsborough High (9-7) last week. Armwood (9-3) faces the undefeated Gainesville Hurricanes (12-0), ranked nationally and in the state at 71 and 3, respectively, according to MaxPreps.com. Meanwhile, the Hawks are ranked 304 in the nation and 21 in the state, according to MaxPreps.com. The Armwood Hawks face the Largo Packers in Largo for the opening game of the 2012 Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) football playoffs. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

  The Armwood Hawks begin their quest for a state crown with their Class 6A-Region 2 quarterfinal game tonight, Nov. 16, against the undefeated Largo Packers. Game time in Largo for the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) regional quarterfinal contest is 7:30 p.m. The Largo Packers (11-0 overall, 5-0 in league play) are ranked 105 in the nation and sixth in the state, according to MaxPreps.com.  Meanwhile, the Hawks (7-3 overall, 5-1 in league play) are ranked 761 in the nation and 62 in the state, according to MaxPreps.com. Armwood Football: Hawks Face King Lions at Home Tonight (Nov. 2)

Game time Nov. 2 is 7:30 p.m. for the Armwood High School Hawks, who host the King Lions at the Lyle Flagg Field in Seffner. It is the final game of the regular season for the Hawks.

  The Armwood Hawks, following last week's heartbreakingly close, single-point loss in overtime to their perennial rivals, the Plant High Panthers, tonight at home face the King Lions for Armwood's final regular game of the season.  Game time Nov. 2 is 7:30 p.m. at the Lyle Flagg Field at Armwood High School in Seffner. King is 3-6 for the season and 2-3 in league play. The Lions are ranked 4,917 in the nation and 277 in the state, according to MaxPreps.com. Armwood Football: Hawks Fall to Plant Panthers in Overtime

The clash of the titans came up a victory for the Plant High Panthers, who handed the Armwood Hawks their third defeat of the season, with a 20-19 win in overtime.

  The Armwood Hawks lost in overtime Oct. 26 to their perennial rivals, the Plant High Panthers, in a 1-point game (19-20) that puts the Hawks at 6-3 for the season and the Panthers at 7-1. In league play, the Panthers are 2-1; the Hawks, 4-1. Armwood last year beat the Panthers, 21-0, before Plant went on to win the Class 8A state title. The Hawks won the state Class 6A championship game, but in June that title was stripped after a Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) ruling concerning ineligible players. The Panthers this season also beat Jesuit (18-0), Jefferson (52-20), Tampa Bay Tech (21-14), Wharton (27-7), Brandon (55-0) and Alonso (22-12). Armwood Football: Hawks Face Panthers at Plant High Tonight (Oct. 26)

Game time Oct. 26 is 7:30 p.m. for the Armwood High School Hawks. They travel to Tampa to face their perennial rivals, the Plant High School Panthers. Both teams won state championship games last year.

  The Armwood Hawks, following last week's 0-3 loss to Hillsborough, travel back to Tampa tonight, Oct. 26, to face the Panthers at Plant High School. Game time is 7:30 p.m. Call it the match between the titans, what others are calling "the game of the week." Armwood last year beat the Panthers, 21-0, before Plant went on to win the Class 8A state title.
