A walking trail reportedly is set to open within two months at the Dr. Hal and Lynn Brewer Park in Plant City. Hal Brewer died in November at age 85. He was a long-time Plant City physician and supporter of Plant City Entertainment.
A walking trail at the 11.2-acre park at Grant and Hunter streets in Plant City, named for Dr. Hal Brewer and his wife, Lynn, is set to open within two months, according to a TBO.com report written by long-timer Plant City reporter and editor Dave Nicholson. The walking trail at the Dr. Hal and Lynn Brewer Park is complete, but work continues on other amenities, according to the TBO.com report, posted Feb. 22, 2013. Hal Brewer, who retired after a long and popular career as a Plant City physician, died from cancer in November at age 85. Plans call for lighting, benches and better stormwater retention and a gazebo, monument sign, bike rack and pond fountain. "Long overdue" was the sentiment expressed by past recipients of the Alice B. Tompkins Community Service Award, who heralded this year's selection of honoree Betty Jo Tompkins. The award is given annually by the Community Roundtable.
Noticeably missing at the Community Affairs Dinner hosted by the Community Roundtable at the Center Place Fine Arts & Civic Association on Feb. 20 was longtime community advocate and volunteer Betty Jo Tompkins, who never misses the annual event. This year, because she is recuperating from a medical condition, Tompkins had to sit out. But she wasn't out of mind. Hardly. Tompkins at the dinner was named the newest recipient of the Alice B. Up the road from Brandon High School, the original Beef 'O' Brady's restaurant on Kings Avenue pays tribute to the school's storied wrestling team and its individual state champions.
Travis Berridge this weekend became the 60th wrestler in Brandon High School history to take home a state crown, in a 2013 contest that featured as well the school's seventh wrestler to take home an individual title for all four years of high school. In achieving that milestone, Kevin Norstrem also became the school's third wrestler to win five state titles, having won a title as well in the eighth grade. Last year, two wrestlers achieved that accomplishment as well: Rossi Bruno and Clark Glass. A table at the Original Beef O' Brady's restaurant in Brandon, on Kings Avenue, pays tribute to these and other state champions representing Brandon High School since 1974, when Tony Ippolito won the school's first individual state title. "Surprise patrols" visited Hillsborough public schools this month to announce the finalists for the Ida S. Baker Diversity Educator of the Year, Instructional Support Employee of the Year and Teacher of the Year.
Representatives from the Hillsborough Education Foundation visited schools and educational sites this month to surprise and recognized 17 edcators as finalists for this year's Ida S. Baker Diversity Educator of the Year, Instructional Support Employee of the Year and Teacher of the Year awards. "The 17 finalists represent the 'best of the best' from Hillsborough Public Schools," according to a foundation report. "A winner in each category wil be named at the 2013 Excellence in Education Awards banquet, presented by the Suncoast Schools Federal Credit Union." Who will succeed Tammy Holmberg as Brandon's Key Citizen of the Year? The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) announced nominees today for its awards program for film and television actors and ensembles. Here’s a list of films playing at AMC The Regency 20 and television dates and times for the awards program.
Nominees for outstanding acting performances in 2012 films were announced Dec. 12 for the 19th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards. In addition to its awards in five film categories, SAG also hands out awards in eight primetime television categories. (See full list of SAG nominees online.) The awards program will be simulcast live nationally on TNT and TBS on Sunday, Jan. 27 at 8 p.m. (ET) from the Los Angeles Shrine Exposition Center. The Center Place Fine Arts & Civic Association in Brandon cannot run without the support of volunteers, says Dawn Galia, the center's executive director. Those volunteers were celebrated at a luncheon Nov. 13.
The Center Place Fine Arts & Civic Association hosted an appreciation luncheon Nov. 13 to thank its volunteers, without whom the not-for-profit center could not be in business, said Dawn Galia, the center's exeuctive director. "The volunteers are the heart of the organization," she said. "A lot of people don't realize how small our staff is. We have more than 50,000 people a year come through our doors and our staff is two full-time employees and a few part-timers. We couldn't hold the events that we have here without our volunteers."
