Democrats To Address Progresssive Women In Office, Transportation Issues

Melissa Baldwin of the Florida Conservation Alliance Institute and Ellis Robinson of Ruth’s List Florida will address the East Hillsborough County Democratic Club at its Sept. 13 meeting at Barnacles in Brandon.

The East Hillsborough County Democratic Club will welcome two female speakers tonight, Sept. 13, at the group’s monthly meeting. Ellis Robinson will discuss the work of Ruth’s List Florida on behalf of progressive women candidates for office in Tallahassee, in county commissions, in city councils, and in other key positions around Florida. In preparation for the 2010 election, Ruth’s List Florida trained more than 200 candidates and provided coaching for and actively endorsed two dozen candidates for the Florida legislature and three county commission seats. All Ruth’s List Florida candidates with a primary race won their primary, sending three Democratic progressive women to Tallahassee immediately, and assuring election of another four. …

Brandon Networkers Witness Shooting Involving Deputies and Trespasser Outside Barnacles

A report from the scene outside Barnacles and Walgreens in Brandon, where members of the YP Brandon networking group witnessed a deputy’s shooting of a man resisting arrest on suspicion of trespassing after warning.

Facing no more than a misdemeanor charge on suspicion of trespassing after warning, a man was fighting for his life at Tampa General Hospital and facing instead what could be felony charges after he was shot by a Hillsborough County Sheriff’s deputy outside Barnacles in Brandon on April 13. UPDATE: Charges lodged against Evelio David Rodriguez, who remains in critical condition at Tampa General Hospital, according to April 14 report. Charged with two counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, two counts of battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest with violence and depriving an officer of means of protection. Local Band 'Mad With Power' Has First Show at Barnacles in Brandon

The band from Greater Brandon has a song set that draws upon the classic rock era and from the three decades of music since.

Classic rock makes the playlist but so, too, songs from the past three decades for Mad With Power, a band of hometown musicians spanning four decades in age. This time last year the band was just getting together, inspired by the direction of Jody Roberts, 39, who met Kimberlee Sivret, 45, while performing the Footlights Theatre Production of “Sweeney Todd” at the Center Place Fine Arts & Civic Association in Brandon. Sivret had both the voice he was looking for and the passion to take it to a wider audience with a cover band throughout the Greater Brandon area and beyond. “Who doesn’t live that dream?” Roberts asked. “A lot of people sing in the shower, why not sing on stage?” The band had its first show at Barnacles in Brandon on Jan. 7…
