Puppies Found Abandoned in Brandon Trash Can

The litter was found in a trash can outside the Brandon Community Center, WTSP News 10 reports. The mother and her puppies are doing fine, and a $1,000 reward is being offered for information on who's responsible.

A litter of puppies was found abandoned in a trash can outside the Brandon Community Center, WTSP News 10 reports. A woman discovered the puppies earlier this week, the news station reports, as their mother, a terrier mix, was circling the bin and trying to get them out. "The puppies were only a few days old and had been tied up in some kind of clothing and tossed inside the trash can," the station wrote in an article accompanying their video report. A donor is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to whoever is responsible, WTSP reports. Anyone with information is asked to call 813-744-5660. "Separating these animals from their mom is a recipe for disaster," Hillsborough County Animal Services spokesperson Marti Ryan told the …

Five Things To Know About Volunteering at the Cold-Weather Shelter

Three neighbors and friends volunteer at the Brandon Community Center on Sadie Street when Hillsborough County officials deem it cold enough to open the center as a cold-weather shelter. Here's what they've learned.

For the 14th time this season, the cold-weather shelter at the Brandon Community Center on Sadie Street opened for business to house the homeless and people living without adequate heat. There, Jan. 22, three Brandon residents, who live in heated homes and in the same neighborhood, worked as volunteers to pay it forward and to give back to the community. The neighbors — Barbara Schnaare, Margaret Leon and Henry Leon, no relation — took time out from a game of Scrabble in the late-evening hours to offer five things you need to know about volunteering at the cold-weather shelter: From Dec. 1 to Jan. 22, the Brandon shelter has been open 14 times. Hillsborough County officials open shelters, including the one on Sadie Street in Brandon, when …

Greater Brandon Cold-Weather Shelter Set To Go for a Possible Four-Day Opening

Three days for sure, starting tonight, the Brandon Community Center on Sadie Street will open as a shelter to feed and house the homeless and people without adequate heat. Saturday's temperatures might drop low enough to warrant an opening as well.

Shelters are set to open for the first time this year — and for a 12th, 13th and 14th time this season — starting today thanks to the cold front sweeping through the Tampa Bay area and surrounding counties. Indeed, Greater Brandon volunteers are gearing up for a possible 15th day of opening as well, as temperatures on Saturday might dip to freezing as well. The shelter serving the area's homeless and people without adequate heat is at the Brandon Community Center on Sadie Street. A four- night in a-row opening in the supposedly "fair-weather tropics" is not unusual to Vince Ferraro, a board member of both the Emergency Care Help Organization and the Greater Brandon Ecumenical Council, doing social service work as the I Am Hope Cafe. "Last …

Stories of Hope, Help and Acceptance Define the Brandon Cold-Weather Shelter Experience

With temperatures in the freezing territory, people from all walks of life come together for a night of hospitality and volunteerism at the Brandon Community Center.

As a retired registered nurse, Beth Biafora isn't ready to stop hearing the calling. She volunteers at the Brandon Recreation Center on the nights the center is open to serve as a cold-weather shelter for the homeless and people who live without adequate heat. As a long-time advocate for the homeless, Don Heald, with Concerned Action in Christ and the Greater Brandon Ecumenical Council (GBEM), drops in to bring unused food from an area restaurant whose owners would rather serve the hungry then discard the food as waste. And as a man living alone in the woods, "Ralph" said he wants to remain anonymous because there's too many people he knows who don't know he's homeless — and he wants to keep it that way. Collectively, these stories define …

Linda, thank you for writing this article. These people need our help and hopefully this can bring some awareness to the community about what is going on. It does not take much to help them just to let them know people do care about them, thanks again Ryan Harrington.   more ›

Shelters Open for a 10th Time; Freeze Warnings Issued

While the East Coast battles the remnants of a blizzard, the weather down south in Greater Brandon is mandating the opening of the Brandon Recreation Center on Sadie Street as one of four Hillsborough County cold weather shelters.

Shelters are set to open for a 10th time this season thanks to the freeze and hard-freeze warnings issued for the Tampa Bay area and surrounding counties. In the Greater Brandon area that means round- the-clock hours Dec. 27 for the Brandon Community Center on Sadie Street. There, the homeless and people living in homes without adequate heat can find shelter from the cold. "We'll be ready to go by 6 p.m. tonight," said Glenda Jaudon, senior recreation leader at the center. "Food's coming from Metropolitan Ministries and some in the community brings in food. There will be lots to eat and lots of blankets for warmth." Ten people showed up for shelter from the cold Dec. 26, when center staff was told to open its doors for shelter warmth for …
