Brandon High Senior Charged With Bringing Knife to School

A senior faces charges after a security camera caught him with a knife, according to reports.

An 18-year-old Brandon High School student was arrested and accused of bringing a knife to campus, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. Pedro Luis Vazquez, spotted on a security tape holding a knife behind his back while arguing with another student, an arrest affidavit shows accodring to Tampabay.com. Vazquez is senior at the school, the website reports.  The school was locked down as a search for the knife took place and Vazquez later said he threw the knife into the street, according to Tampabay.com to throwing the knife onto the street.  Read more about the arrest in the original story.

Cancer Fighters Ready for Brandon Relay For Life Tonight

The overnight 2013 Brandon Relay For Life fundraiser is set to start 6 p.m. April 12 at Brandon High School. Relays at Bloomingdale, Riverview and FishHawk collectively have raised more than $365,000 to date.

  The American Cancer Society's 2013 Relay For Life season in Eastern Hillsborough County continues tonight, April 12, at Brandon High School, where the overnight fundraiser is set to kick off 6 p.m. with 23 teams and about 233 registered participants.  The final two Relays for Eastern Hillsborough County are scheduled for April 19 at Armwood and Plant City high schools. Relays were held last week at Bloomingdale High School and last month at Newsome and Riverview High Schools. According to Sara Vinzant, community representative for the Southeast Hillsborough Unit of the American Cancer Society, the three Relays alone have raised more than $365,000. Cancer Fighters Gearing Up for 2013 Brandon Relay For Life

The 2013 Brandon Relay For Life kicks off 6 p.m. April 12 at Brandon High School. Donations for the six Relays in Eastern Hillsborough County top $300,000.

  The American Cancer Society's 2013 Relay For Life season in Eastern Hillsborough County continues next weekend at Brandon High School, where the overnight fundraiser is set to kick off April 12 at 6 p.m. with 23 teams and more than 200 registered participants.  Additional Relays for Eastern Hillsborough County are scheduled April 19 for Armwood and Plant City high schools. Relays were held this weekend at Bloomingale High and late last month at Riverview and Newsome high schools. Collectively, as of 9 a.m. April 7, the six sites in Eastern Hillsborough County had reported 251 teams, 3,753 participants and $322,299.69 raised. Eastern Hillsborough Relays Start Strong, Build Momentum

The American Cancer Society's 2013 Relay For Life season in Eastern Hillsborough County started strong with events at Riverview and Newsome high schools. Events are coming at Armwood, Bloomingdale, Brandon and Plant City high schools.

  Successful events at Newsome and Riverview high schools marked the opening round of the American Cancer Society's 2013 Relay For Life season in Eastern Hillsborough County, with close to $190,000 raised at these two Relays alone, according to the latest online account. Additional Relays for Eastern Hillsborough County are scheduled in the weeks ahead for Armwood, Bloomingdale, Brandon and Plant City high schools. Collectively, as of 5 a.m. March 23, the six sites in Eastern Hillsborough County had reported 249 teams, 3,634 participants and $274,045.14 raised. (See chart below.) Brandon Wrestlers Immortalized at Beef 'O' Brady's on Kings Avenue

Up the road from Brandon High School, the original Beef 'O' Brady's restaurant on Kings Avenue pays tribute to the school's storied wrestling team and its individual state champions.

  Travis Berridge this weekend became the 60th wrestler in Brandon High School history to take home a state crown, in a 2013 contest that featured as well the school's seventh wrestler to take home an individual title for all four years of high school. In achieving that milestone, Kevin Norstrem also became the school's third wrestler to win five state titles, having won a title as well in the eighth grade. Last year, two wrestlers achieved that accomplishment as well: Rossi Bruno and Clark Glass. A table at the Original Beef O' Brady's restaurant in Brandon, on Kings Avenue, pays tribute to these and other state champions representing Brandon High School since 1974, when Tony Ippolito won the school's first individual state title. College Financial Aid Workshop at Brandon High Tonight

The first of a series of financial aid information nights is set for tonight, Jan. 15, at Brandon High School. Can't make the date? Additional workshops are scheduled for Jefferson, Gaither, Riverview and Hillsborough high schools.

  Is there anything more costly than a college education? Of course, but that doesn't lessen the pain for college-bound seniors and their parents in trying economic times. This year, as in years past, Hillsborough guidance counselors are hosting financial aid seminars to help families get the best financial-aid deals. Remembering Heather Hall: Memorial Run Today at Brandon High (Dec. 1)

Heather Bates Hall, a mathematics teacher and cheerleading coach at Brandon High School, lost her battle against cancer in November. The community is invited to pay tribute to her today, at the Dec. 1 Heroes for Heather 5K Memorial Run.

  The Heroes for Heather 5K Memorial Run is scheduled for today, Dec. 1, at Brandon High School, 1101 Victoria St. Registration and check-in is at 9 a.m., with the run to follow an hour later. The cost is $15. Each runner will receive a "Heroes for Heather" T-shirt and other amenities. Electronic registration will close Nov. 26. Brandon High Alumni To Meet at The Clubhouse Sports Cafe

The alumni association for Brandon's oldest high school meets monthly at The Clubhouse Sports Cafe in Brandon. The meeting tonight, Nov. 19, is the final such "meet-and-greet" for the year.

  "Once an Eagle, Always an Eagle" is the motto you learn quickly when you're a student at Brandon High School, founded in 1914 at the McLane Middle School campus and now in business at 1101 Victoria Street in Brandon. The motto rings especially true for the Brandon High School Alumni Association, which meets monthly at The Clubhouse Sports Cafe at 1265 Kingsway Road in Brandon. The last such meet-and-greet for the year is scheduled for tonight, Nov. 19, and all Brandon High School alumni, members or non-members, are invited. 'Joyous' Remembrances Set for Heather Hall Bates; Visitation, Memorial, Funeral Dates

Heather Bates Hall, a mathematics teacher and cheerleading coach at Brandon High School, lost her battle against cancer. Her visitation, memorial and funeral is set for this weekend.

  The mood was somber at Brandon High School on Nov. 14, as a school community learned of the death of mathematics teacher and cheerleading coach Heather Bates Hall, 28, who lost her years-long battle with cancer the night before. But it's with a "joyous" and remembering heart that Hall's husband, Jarrett, a deputy with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, hopes students, teachers, family, friends and neighbors will pay tribute to his young wife, who died from cancer Nov. 13 at age 28.
